About The Position

UPMC Vision Institute is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician Intermediate to support clinical and research operations at the Mercy Pavilion, located at 1622 Locust Street, 5th Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. This full-time position is scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with potential schedule adjustments during the training period; no weekend or evening hours are required. Responsibilities include performing ophthalmic clinical assessments such as technician work-ups, visual acuity (VA) testing, and visual field (VF) testing, as well as working closely with physicians and the research team to complete necessary clinical trial assessments. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of ophthalmic experience required and COA certification, OR 5 overall years of ophthalmic experience.
  • Valid CPR certification
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34

Responsibilities

  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.
  • Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuity
  • Lensometry & Keratometry: automated and manual
  • Pupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.
  • Visual fields: Amsler grid and confrontation fields.
  • Ocular Motility: Identify functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus
  • Advanced Refractometry: manifest refractometry & auto-refractor, transposing scripts
  • Tonometry: Goldmann, ICare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of each
  • Supplemental skills: pachymetry, Schirmer's, glare testing, color testing.
  • Angle assessment & dilation of pupils.
  • Contact lenses: insertion, removal, and instructions.
  • Ability to routinely perform automated visual fields, fundus, Ascan. (Sonomed, IOL Master & Lenstar), Bscan, corneal topography, OCT.
  • Ability to scribe and assist with lasers, injections or other in office procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.
  • Maintains and trouble shoots all ophthalmic equipment issues and alert manager when repairs are needed.
  • Works directly with the physicians, fellows, and residents of their service for increased efficiency and patient satisfaction.
  • Travel to other clinical sites.
