This job provides individualized, direct patient care of assigned patients under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Assists in the implementation of the delivery of health care services. Assists fellow employees in providing the highest quality personalized patient care and maintains a positive work relationship with the health care team. The employee should demonstrate the ability to provide care and service with individuals of all assigned age groups Education Required - High School diploma or equivalent Preferred - Bachelor's degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology Work Experience Preferred - 2 years experience or Associate’s degree in Ophthalmic Assisting. Experience with ophthalmology examinations in a high patient volume department. Certifications Required - Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard Good interpersonal skills Job Duties Enables clinic operations by effectively managing the patient flow in and out of exam rooms. Retrieves and collates patient information for provider. Cleans stocks and maintains exam rooms, procedure rooms, instruments and equipment and prepares patient for provider exam. Obtains near and distant visual acuity, amsler grid, worth 4dot, color vision, stereo vision, and basil tear secretion tests. Pulls patient's contact lens records for optometrist review. Cleans, disinfects and packs instruments for autoclaving. Documents per department guidelines, pertinent patient information in medical record (including, but not limited to, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, brief history, patient instructions, communication of test results, etc). Ensures future appointments have been scheduled or communicated and referrals/pre-authorizations have been initiated and obtained. Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style. Physical and Environmental Demands The physical essential functions of this job include (but are not limited to) the following: Frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Mechanical lifting devices (carts, dollies, etc.) or team lifts should be utilized. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. There is no occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology
  • 2 years experience or Associate’s degree in Ophthalmic Assisting.
  • Experience with ophthalmology examinations in a high patient volume department.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) through JCAHPO
