About The Position

The Diagnostic Technician is responsible for performing state-of-the-art diagnostic testing for all Faculty, Fellows and Residents at the Flaum Eye Institute/Department of Ophthalmology. Technicians will perform technical testing, clinical support and patient care for various physician and sub-specialties throughout the eye institute. In addition to those listed in Ophthalmic Technologist III; provides intermediate to advanced diagnostic testing and imaging. Works closely with a Physician and spends most of the time working with patients and supporting the physicians. May perform as Lead Technician.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • 1-2 years of closely related clinical experience or training/coursework in optometry, ophthalmology or related field required.
  • A 4-year college education, including related optometry, ophthalmology and/or technical training with certification by the registry of the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology, or other nationally recognized professional certifying body; or a 2-year college education in an appropriate science and 2 years of closely related laboratory experience preferred.
  • CPR or obtain CPR Certification.
  • Possesses basic knowledge of optics including plus and minus lenses and their use with patients who are myopic, hyperopic, and have astigmatism.
  • Intermediate ocular pharmacology knowledge of drops and medications used for eye examinations.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification by the registry of the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology, or other nationally recognized professional certifying body required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic testing or services in support of the following sub-specialties: cornea, comprehensive, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculo-facial plastics, retina, and resident education.
  • Ability to perform OCT (Anterior & Posterior Segment), Fundus Photography, Visual Fields: Humphrey & Goldmann, and Corneal Topography.
  • Perform advanced testing and imaging per provider's request including Ocular Biometry (IOL Master & A Scan), External/Oculo-facial Plastics Photography, Ultra-Wide Field Fundus Imaging, Auto-Fluorescence Imaging, and Color vision testing using Ishihara, D-15 and/or 100 Hue.
  • Assist with coverage for Ultrasound Biomicrography (UBM & B Scan), Fluorescein / ICG Angiography, Slitlamp & Gonio Biomicrography, Specular Biomicrography, Videography and Video editing, and Retcam / Handheld Fundus Photography.
  • Perform clinical-clerical office duties, which would include checking diagnostic schedules, data entry, checking for request forms in advance, printing up results and related administrative activities deemed necessary by the department.
  • Stock rooms according to practice needs and adhere to hospital policies regarding locked items, sharps, checking medication for expired dates and opened dates.
  • Learn the necessary information for their job, obtain certifications, and maintain this knowledge.
