About The Position

An Ophthalmic Surgery Technician (or Ophthalmic Surgical Assistant) provides specialized clinical and surgical support to ophthalmologists during eye procedures. This role bridges the gap between routine diagnostic testing and high-stakes operating room assistance.

Requirements

  • EDUCATION: Post high school, vocational/specialized training.
  • EXPERIENCE: Previous Eye experience preferred.
  • REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION: Graduate of approved program.
  • Certification preferred
  • BLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • Surgical Assistance: Assists surgeons during procedures like cataract removal or LASIK. Tasks include prepping and draping patients, passing surgical instruments, and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Performs specialized measurements such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) , visual field testing, and A/B ultrasonography to determine surgical plans.
  • Patient Care: Conducts pre-operative assessments, administers eye medications (drops), and provides post-operative instructions to patients and families.
  • Equipment Management: Sterilizes and maintains delicate surgical instruments. They also calibrate and troubleshoot diagnostic equipment like autorefractors and Humphrey field analyzers.
  • Clinical Support: Documents patient medical histories, records vital signs, and manages patient flow within the clinic or surgical center
  • Technical Proficiency: Mastery of ophthalmic anatomy, sterile techniques, and medical software (EHR/EMR).
  • Dexterity & Detail: High level of manual dexterity for handling minute surgical tools and extreme attention to detail for accurate eye measurements.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Empathy and clear communication are essential for comforting anxious patients before surgery.
