About The Position

Reporting to Practice Manager, the Ophthalmic Assistant provides clinical support to the Physician(s) and Advanced Practice Provider(s) (APPs). The Ophthalmic Assistant provides the medical history, initial exam, and ancillary testing for patients prior to seeing the physician(s) or APP(s). The Ophthalmic Assistant is also responsible for compliance with all OSHA and HIPAA regulations and ensuring completion of all duties vital to patient care. Exceptions include Urgent Care and After-Hours Clinics Paid Time Off Medical, Dental, and Vision 403b with Match Opportunity for Career Growth PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Ophthalmic Assistant, under the direction and supervision of the physician, provides clinical support to the Physician(s) and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). The Ophthalmic Assistant provides the medical history, initial exam, and ancillary testing for patients prior to seeing the Physicians or Advanced Practice Providers. The Ophthalmic Assistant is also responsible for compliance with all OSHA and HIPAA regulations, and ensuring completion of all duties vital to patient care. The Ophthalmic Assistant is a highly visible position that is always responsible for creating a positive impression with patients, family members, and other visitors to the office.

Requirements

  • Associate will work directly with assigned practice staff and will be provided resource materials necessary to obtain Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) within initial 90 days of employment and COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) within 18 months of employment.
  • Learn essential duties: visual acuity testing (distance and near), lensometry (manual and automated), measure IOP, refractions, cycloplegic refractions, pupil evaluation, muscle balance testing, confrontational fields, OPD, OCT, Visual field, A-scan, Lenstar, pachymetry, manual keratometry, glare testing, color testing, stereo, and worth 4 dot.
  • Minimum: High School Diploma/G.E.D.
  • One year experience in Ophthalmology OR two years of experience in a medical facility/practice preferred.
  • Associate will obtain Ophthalmic Scribe Certification (OSC) within 90 days of employment and COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) no later than 18 months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Ophthalmology Assistant experience preferred; but willing to train the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Document in chart the appropriate patient history (i.e. vision, glasses, contacts, IOP, refraction, pupils, MB, confrontational fields, and prepare patient for dilated exam).
  • Provide patient care by giving clear direction to the patient.
  • Address patient concerns about the exam. Document appropriately in-patient chart.
  • Perform ancillary tests (i.e. OPD, OCT, visual fields, immersion a-scan, Lenstar, pachymetry, retinoscopy refractions, glare testing, color testing, tonometry, and manual keratometry)
  • Provide instructions and assist with minor in-office surgical procedures under direction of the provider(s).
  • Ensure complete and accurate information in patient chart.
  • Maintain adequate level of supplies in exam rooms, workstation, and log/report shortages to manager.
  • Clean and disinfect exam rooms in between patients and at the end of the day.
  • Keep dilating room clean throughout day and at end of day.
  • Perform cleaning, maintenance, and/or sterilization of equipment and instruments.
  • Report malfunction of equipment to appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist with completion of patient requests and messages via Epic IN basket.
  • Ensure completion of all forms vital to the revenue cycle (i.e. verification/clarification of orders, waivers for non-covered services, encounter form)
  • Timely and accurate filing/distribution of all patient information.
  • Perform appropriate testing based on orders from the provider.
  • Maintain current and accurate medication logs that are in every exam room, lab/tech station and procedure room.
  • Other duties as assigned.
