About The Position

The Operator performs work operating and maintaining wastewater treatment equipment, processes, and coordinating personnel as assigned under the general direction of a Lead Operator, Superintendent or Director. Employee is responsible for observing that all systems are operating properly. In the absence of the Lead Operator, Superintendent or Director, employee is responsible for the operation of the treatment facility on an assigned shift. Ensures that all transactions with peers and public are handled in a professional and courteous manner.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two years experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A, Type 1 Wastewater Operator Certification.
  • Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brakes and tanker endorsement within 24 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Observes Treatment Plant process; monitors plant equipment and process to ascertain and assure control of equipment involved with treatment process.
  • Performs laboratory analysis to determine existing conditions when laboratory technicians are off-duty (i.e. weekends and holidays) in order to establish control responses and determines National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit discharge limitations.
  • Observes plant equipment for malfunctions; isolates failed equipment; notifies appropriate personnel for corrective action.
  • Runs operating system to control plant operations, responds to alarms and takes corrective action to remedy conditions.
  • Inspects plant equipment to assure proper working condition, operates equipment, interacts with plant personnel concerning plant operating conditions and problems.
  • Loads and unloads sludge and transports and disposes of sludge as needed.
  • Coaches and instructs Operator-In-Training.
  • Operates and maintains assigned treatment plant equipment such as chemical feed systems, pumps, blowers, sludge handling equipment, front-end loaders, and dump trucks.
  • Keeps records of plant process; records measurements, readings and maintenance problems; communicates status of operation to oncoming shift.
  • Performs routine maintenance and lubrication on equipment.
