About The Position

The Operator - Rail/Switch position at Compass Minerals is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of SOP, Salt, and MgCL2 products. This role involves assisting the Shuttlewagon Operator with the spotting, staging, and preparation of rail cars in accordance with daily shipping and unloading requirements. The operator must ensure the inspection, cleaning, and general care of assigned areas, including tracks and equipment, while adhering to safety protocols and effective communication with team members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Previous experience or education demonstrating the ability to monitor equipment for proper operation and maintain product quality.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment or working with rail equipment is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Access for analyzing and communicating information.
  • Ability to navigate an ERP system to issue work requests and review inventory.

  • Experience in a similar operational role within the rail industry.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to rail operations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect rail cars for proper loading requirements and cleanliness before loading and unloading processes begin.
  • Work in conjunction with the shuttlewagon operator to ensure readiness of coupling devices for proper alignment during coupling and decoupling processes.
  • Remove chocks, connect air brake hoses, disengage hand brakes, and inspect tracks for obstacles before moving rail cars.
  • Communicate potential safety hazards to the shuttlewagon operator during rail car pushes and coupling processes.
  • Know clearance points and set hand brakes on cars prior to the uncoupling process.
  • Serve as a backup for the Shuttlewagon Operator as required to cover absences and provide cleanup on tracks.
  • Respond to production needs and communicate resolutions via radio to the weigh master.
