About The Position

We are seeking a Packaging Operator to join our 2nd shift team. The Packaging Operator safely operates high-speed, automated packaging equipment that shrink-wraps finished bottles for shipment. This role includes monitoring equipment, handling packaging materials, and completing required production and quality documentation. Operators use pallet jacks and hand jacks to move materials such as shrink wrap, boxes, and bottle caps. Some assignments may include working in cap handling areas, loading caps into hoppers while following strict food safety, sanitation, and protective clothing requirements. All tasks must be performed in compliance with company safety, quality, food safety, and hygiene standards.

  • Able to read and neatly print, high school diploma or equivalent, strong ability to communicate with co-workers and supervisors.   • Mechanical skills: able to understand, use, and explain the operation of any and all machine controls on equipment related to Packaging equipment (and Cap Hoppers if included) including sensors, safety interlocks and emergency stops, computer screens. Understand power sources on all machines used and machine hazards. Ability to maintain awareness of surroundings and position relative to moving machinery, other employees, and forklifts.
  • Mathematical Skills: add, subtract, multiply and divide. Understanding of decimals and fractions. Recognition and use of numbers. Accurately record numbers on checklists and forms. Analyze and report numbers used in the production setting.
  • Physical Abilities: Able to stand and walk on a concrete floor for on a continuous basis for the duration of the shift; climb industrial stairs and ladders and work at elevations on industrial platforms as necessary. Physically able to bend/stoop/squat/crouch/twist/climb/kneel and balance as needed to ensure, or assist with, the continuous operation of the machinery. Able to lift, carry, push and pull objects of various sizes and up to 60 pounds at one level or from one level to another at varying heights. Perform repetitive finger, arm and upper body movements to reach or move materials or controls, able to turn head and neck to look over shoulder. Vision requirements include focus at different distances, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision. Responsibilities

  • Operate all machinery and associated parts, including, but not limited to, powered industrial conveyor belts and rollers, power driven chains, turn-tables, rotating machinery and machinery moving in 3-D space, and High Temperature machinery. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance operations including clearing jams, using appropriate tools, cleaning techniques and materials and PPE and Cap Handling clothing as needed.
  • Verify all raw materials and machine settings are correct using the production schedule and instructions from shift leader and quality control. Visually check materials and operations during the shift to maintain the quality of the product.
  • Complete all checklists and forms as required by Management.
  • Maintain a constant supply of raw materials including Shrink Wrap and/or boxes to the machinery to maintain a constant operation and avoid downtime. This may include Caps. Ensure a supply of raw materials is available for the next shift.
  • Inspect all raw materials prior to use for correct selection, condition and quality.
  • Respond appropriately to alarms (both sound and visual) and warning lights on all machinery. Be able to differentiate between audible alarms from different sources. Unjam/clear stopped machines using hands and tools, keep hands and body out of moving machinery. Jammed cases can include the 40-pack case which weighs 47 pounds and the 6-pack gallon case that weighs 52.5 pounds.
  • Use computerized screens and manual switches, safety interlocks, and powered controls to ensure smooth operation of machinery.
  • Run multiple Packaging Equipment (Kisters” or “Cermex” machines) and associated machines and parts, as instructed. If applicable, run the Cap Hopper machinery.
  • Use appropriate hand-jacks to safely lift and move rolls of Shrink Wrap, which weigh approximately 100-150 lbs, and load it into the wrapping machines. Able to thread and unjam the Shrink Wrap as necessary. May requires occasional kneeling during the shift.
  • Cleaning: continuously keep floors clean, dry and free of debris and fallen products or materials. Use approved cleaning supplies as directed. Rework damaged or rejected product for shipment, recycling, or trash. Perform daily and special cleaning as instructed and at package changes and at beginning and end of shifts. Use appropriate bins for used supplies and trash. Use compressed air safely.
  • Work with Maintenance technicians to ensure machine set up is correct for the product, or to resolve problems, assist as directed. Maintain safe operation of machinery. Never operate controls when a technician is working on machinery. Understand and report any mechanical issues to Maintenance department technicians, shift leader or management.
  • Identify and report any issues to QC technicians or managers. Report any issues to QC department or Shift Leader or Production Manager to maintain quality packaging and products.
