About The Position

The Operator Maintainer II plays a critical role in bettering people’s days by ensuring Philz Coffee is packaged with exceptional quality, consistency, and efficiency. This position serves as a senior technical resource within the production department, supporting equipment reliability, assisting with machine and equipment issue identification, promoting operational excellence, and training team members on equipment operation and best practices. Operator Maintainer II team members lead by example, support the development of others, and perform all duties in alignment with Philz’s Core Values, established POPs, and safety guidelines.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment with packaging and/or blending machinery.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently operate production equipment and diagnose equipment issues.
  • Proven experience supporting or training less experienced operators.
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Consistent attention to detail and adherence to policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to lead and influence without direct authority.
  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication).
  • Valid driver’s license preferred; clean DMV record may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • ServSafe Food Handler and Forklift certifications are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior operational resource for packaging equipment for the production team, supporting Operators and collaborating closely with Leads.
  • Independently operate and adjust packaging machinery to meet production, quality, and safety standards.
  • Assist in diagnosing simple mechanical and system issues using experience and standard troubleshooting methods, and escalate complex issues to Leads, Management, or Maintenance personnel as appropriate.
  • Resolve minor equipment issues within scope and clearly communicate findings and corrective actions to Leads, Management, or Maintenance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks within training and authorization.
  • Lead and support equipment changeovers, startups, and shutdowns across all packaging machinery in the roasting plant.
  • Verify correct materials, settings, and specifications are in place on all production lines.
  • Ensure accurate lot code entry and production documentation.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and audit-ready work areas in compliance with GMPs and 5S standards.
  • Operate forklifts and manual or electric pallet jacks to move equipment and materials safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct and validate process quality control checks, ensuring issues are identified and corrected promptly.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and mentor for Operator Maintainer I team members.
  • Assist in training of Operators I on equipment operation, safety practices, standard work, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Reinforce adherence to POPs, safety requirements, and quality standards through hands-on guidance and example.
  • Provide feedback to leadership regarding training needs, performance trends, and opportunities for operational improvement.
  • Perform inventory and cycle counts with a high level of accuracy.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance on machinery and equipment.
  • Assist maintenance personnel by providing accurate diagnostics, equipment history, and operational context to support efficient repairs.
  • Initiate requests through the CMMS system.
  • Partner with maintenance and leadership to reduce downtime and improve asset performance.
  • Ensuring compliance with HACCP, Cal / OSHA, FSMA, SQF and all food and worker safety processes, procedures, regulations, and sustainability compliance programs.
  • Champion safety by modeling proper behaviors and proactively identifying and escalating hazards.
  • Follow Food Safety (FSMA/SQF)) processes, procedures, and regulations; support adherence by coaching team members and escalating concerns as needed.
  • Continuous improvement and 5S projects as directed.
