About The Position

Position Purpose: Performs a variety of unskilled tasks in the operation and maintenance of a water/wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift; does related work as required; has no supervisory capacity. Learns and gains skills in a variety of equipment maintenance, servicing, and operating tasks. Performs routine maintenance and servicing work in the water/wastewater treatment plant. Understands and carries out oral and written directions. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

Requirements

  • 1 to 2 years of experience in operating water/wastewater treatment plants.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools employed in the general operations of engines, pumps, and related equipment.
  • General maintenance work.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Basic biological and chemical principles.
  • Basic familiarity of the principles and practices of water/wastewater treatment plant operations; operating principles of valves, pumps, and motors; principles and methods of bacteriological and chemical sewage analyses; effects and problems of industrial waste in water/wastewater treatment processes, principles of supervision and training; safe work practices.
  • Possess a valid operating license.
  • Operator certification at a level required by the State and the project.
  • Must be able to walk up to 3 miles per 8-hour shift.
  • Must be able to ascend and descend up to 1,100 stair steps per 8-hour shift.
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 bags weighing up to 50 pounds each from floor level up to waist high in an 8- hour shift.
  • Must be able to bend frequently to collect samples.
  • Must be able to push a push-type, power lawn mower for up to 3 hours per 8-hour shift.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, repairs, and maintains the water/wastewater treatment plant's facilities.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests.
  • Diagnose operating problems and perform necessary corrective action during work shift.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
  • Operates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge, and effluent.
  • Monitors gauges, meters, and control panels.
  • Observes and reports abnormalities to supervisor.
  • Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control, starts and stops pumps, engines and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment processes.
  • Maintains shift log and records meter and gauge readings.
  • Takes samples and performs routine laboratory tests and analyses.
  • Performs routine maintenance functions and custodial duties.
  • Does related work as required.
