The Operator I is responsible for performing semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the Dr. Robert E. Young Water Services Center and at various other Water Unit Facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Operations Supervisor/Superintendent or other Water Bureau management staff. Employees are required to work shifts that include days, nights, weekends, emergencies, and holidays; this typically involves 12-hour shifts on a non-rotating schedule. Work involves the use of: Stationery and portable pumps, valves, gates, gauges, meters, control panels, log sheets, process control equipment and motor vehicles. Chemicals such as chlorine, lime, liquid alum, ammonia, and caustic soda are used on a day-to-day basis. Work also includes the operation of unit processes equipment such as flocculators, sludge thickeners, and mixed media/sand filters. Laboratory analyses are also performed as part of the process control measures for water treatment processes. Employees are subject to noise and vibration, fumes, odors, hazardous conditions, dust, poor ventilation, and inclement weather in the work environment. Safety equipment such as dust-masks, breathing apparatus/respirators, gas detectors, hearing protectors, safety glasses, harnesses, first-aid stations, and alarm systems, etc. will be used.
