The Operations Supervisor for Fermentation at Kemin is responsible for providing daily leadership and ensuring compliance with manufacturing standards in the fermentation technology sector. This role involves translating microbial and biochemistry knowledge into effective manufacturing practices, managing production staff, and enhancing workflow efficiency. The position is based in Des Moines, Iowa, and requires occasional night and weekend work as business needs arise.

  • Ensure production requirements are met for the respective department and motivate direct reports toward established production goals.
  • Manage and mentor production staff under the supervision of the Production/Plant Manager.
  • Enhance workflow efficiency by overseeing process steps, identifying critical control points, managing resources, and gathering input from team members.
  • Ensure employees are trained on equipment, SOPs, and other procedures.
  • Ensure raw materials and basic supply levels are sufficient to meet the shift's production schedule.
  • Proactively identify, communicate, and solve issues without disrupting production.
  • Ensure operation of equipment by initiating and following up on outstanding work orders.
  • Review the accuracy of department batch records and follow up on errors.
  • Compile production performance records and data; answer questions and respond to requests.
  • Ensure adherence to the Master Sanitation Schedule and GMP practices by the department.
  • Maintain safety and quality by ensuring organizational standards are met.
  • Continuously improve workflow by monitoring process steps and soliciting ideas from team members.
  • Communicate with all departments and necessary business units regarding production needs.
  • Ensure the product meets established production standards.
  • Follow and maintain an environment of food and feed safety in compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with 5+ years experience in a production environment.
  • 3+ years experience in a production supervisor role.
  • Experience with inspecting and determining quality of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Thorough understanding of bio-processes to effectively operate and manage Kemin's fermentation technology.
  • Proven record of positively leading, training, and motivating employees while adhering to the principles of servant leadership.
  • Ability to read and follow Standard Operating Procedures, solve basic problems, and utilize cognitive reasoning to calculate proper mixtures.
  • Must be reliable with good attendance.
  • Mechanical aptitude and excellent communication skills.
  • Time management and prioritization skills are needed.
  • Ability to see, read, and write numbers and letters; perform advanced math and accurately measure/weigh.
  • Advanced computer knowledge and ability to perform computer entry and complete required documentation.
