About The Position

The Operations Manager performs responsible supervisory work involving the assignment and direct supervision of custodial employees in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of classrooms, office spaces, furnishings and equipment as well as building entrances and exterior walkways. The Operations Manager is also responsible for training new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, electrically-powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals. The Operations Manager (OM) is part of the American Preparatory Academy (APA) support team and as such is responsible for doing whatever it takes to “Clear the Way” for our core business and to be a positive contributor to it. Our core business is educational excellence and strong character development, and the critical process for our core business is combining brilliant teachers with eager learners and proven curriculum in a nurturing learning environment. Our role on the operations team is to help create and maintain that nurturing learning environment and to remove any and all obstacles that may be in the way of our brilliant staff performing at their best.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required, higher education is helpful
  • 3-5 years of experience in custodial, mechanical, and/or support services, preferably in a management or leadership position

Responsibilities

  • Inspect the cleanliness of facilities and areas (may only be accessible by ladder or stairs, bending, reaching or moving furniture, supplies or equipment)
  • Move throughout assigned areas (indoors and outdoors)
  • Supervise other Operations employees
  • Ensure quality of work by inspecting the work of other Operations personnel
  • Assist in hiring qualified employees by participating in the interviewing process
  • Evaluate new custodial supplies and equipment by conducting testing of such items and recommending the appropriateness of their use

  • Coordinate with admin and other support staff to proactively, effectively, and enthusiastically "Clear the Way". OMs must be able and willing to perform all the essential functions of the job including that of Operations Specialist. (See Operations Specialist Job Description)
  • As a member of the school's admin leadership team, ensure the needs of the school are clearly understood and being met.
  • Ensure effective high-quality performance of service vendors
  • Continually improve people and processes
  • Provide guidance and training on supplies, tools, equipment, processes, communications, etc.
  • Ensure proper resources are in place (equipment & material)
  • Oversee student drop-off & pick-up process coordinating with school admin to ensure safety & efficiency through proper staffing, training and accountability
  • Contribute to the success of the bussing program at the school level, coordinating with the APA Transportation Director.
  • Have or acquire and keep current a CDL license with a school bus endorsement to provide occasional relief driving when necessary
  • Oversee Activity Request Form (ARF) process to ensure clear and timely communication and coordination of needs and available resources
  • Ensure excellence in cleanliness, safety, and regulatory compliance
  • Work with procurement and other departments to make necessary purchases and facility modifications
  • Maximize efficient use of the school's limited resources
  • Coordinate with third party vendors and hold them accountable to performance expectations
  • Coordinate and share best practices with other APA support staff (Area Operations Managers, Operations Specialists, IT-A/V, Procurement, and others)
