The Operations Manager at Smurfit Kappa North America is responsible for organizing the plant to maximize efficiency while ensuring safety and quality standards are met. This role involves overseeing production processes, conducting performance reviews, and implementing continuous improvement techniques to enhance productivity and employee engagement. The Operations Manager will also collaborate with the management team to formulate business strategies and monitor performance against set targets.

  • Organize the plant for maximum efficiency under safe working conditions.
  • Conduct regular visits to work areas to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Encourage team members to report safety incidents and unsafe conditions.
  • Carry out periodic reviews of processes to identify and implement solutions.
  • Conduct annual Performance Development Reviews (PDR) with production management staff.
  • Review production processes regularly with the management team to ensure effectiveness.
  • Foster learning and development among team members.
  • Advise General Managers of any concerns regarding departmental performance.
  • Oversee cross-training among team members.
  • Define KPIs for direct reports and ensure timely follow-up with monthly reports to the General Manager.
  • Participate in formulating business strategies, plans, and budgets.
  • Increase productivity by reducing downtime and improving efficiency.
  • Develop and execute operational plans including performance targets and budgets.
  • Lead the development of processes to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets.
  • Set performance standards for personnel and promote continuous improvement techniques.
  • Develop programs aimed at improving product and service quality to maximize customer satisfaction.
  • Coach and manage a team of managers and individual contributors, including hiring and performance evaluations.
  • Initiate training programs for production employees focusing on health and safety.
  • Stimulate and motivate plant employees to create good working conditions and communication.
  • Prepare and implement machinery investments and layouts to increase capacity and reduce costs.
  • Manage routine processing activities in compliance with company standards.
  • Ensure direct reports have the necessary knowledge and skills, providing guidance and support.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in business, industrial packaging, or a related field preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in TQM, ISO, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or Process Improvement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop staff at all levels.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various departments to resolve challenges.
  • Strong analytical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work against strict deadlines.
  • Experience in the manufacturing industry.
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations.
  • Experience in managing cross-functional teams.
