About The Position

The O&M technician competently operates and maintains a simple cycle generating facility and all associated auxiliary and support equipment with minimal guidance or assistance. Monitors and operates the system based on operational changes such as start-up, shutdown, and emergency response during trips and/or major power plant load adjustments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Successful completion of DOL Bureau of Apprenticeship Training Program, or other equivalent mechanical, electrical or maintenance training program.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be in compliance with El Paso Electric Company’s Driving Policy.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Mechanic or Electrician in a Power Plant or related industrial environment which shall include experience with combustion turbines or power generation and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Must have the ability to administer and manage programs in a technology base environment.
  • Knowledge of reliable based maintenance philosophies, precision maintenance procedures, machine shop procedures, mechanical/electrical trades, power tools and welding equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair equipment, interpret technical manuals, read, and interpret blueprints/diagrams, construction and fabrication drawings and work under unusual or special conditions.
  • Solid mechanical/electrical aptitude with a strong knowledge in interpreting reports and instrumentation, controls and electrical systems.
  • General knowledge of hazardous material handling.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, electrical one-lines, logic drawings, technical manuals and P&ID's.
  • Proficient at troubleshooting and inspecting programmable logic controllers, distributive control systems including control card replacement and wiring terminations.
  • Strong computer skills, including the use of word processors and spreadsheets, and knowledge of computerized maintenance and operations management systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and detailed understanding of the operation of the plant systems and equipment.
  • Combustion Turbine Experience (Aeroderivative or frame).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and analyze maintenance requirements for plant equipment.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in mechanical maintenance activities, including welding, valve repair, pipefitting, and overhaul/repair/alignment of rotating equipment (pumps, fans, compressors, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge and experience in maintenance of instrumentation, controls and electrical systems, including DCS & PLC control systems, plant communications, plant electrical devices, plant electrical distribution power systems, and plant motors.
  • Ability to operate forklift and other powered industrial trucks.
  • Ability to select equipment and rig for lifting of heavy and unbalanced loads.
  • Good working knowledge of water chemistry requirements for generating facilities, including reverse osmosis/deionizers and cooling towers.
  • Ability to implement and enforce all safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Prepare with a high degree of accuracy and submit all required reports on a timely basis.
  • Excellent leadership and work ethic.
  • Self-Motivator, team oriented and have strong people skills to effectively complete projects and work schedules.
  • Must have the ability to pass a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE).

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties required in the operation of turbines and auxiliary equipment and other systems. Proficiently operate the plant via a remote distributed control system (DCS) and locally operated Human-Machine Interface and locally operated PLC panel interfaces.
  • Perform installation, inspection, dismantling, repairs, adjustments and reassembly of plant mechanical equipment such as turbines, pumps, compressors, gearboxes, etc.
  • Perform installation, inspection, dismantling, repairs, adjustments and reassembly of plant electrical equipment such as generators, regulators, control and power wiring, lighting, controls, breakers, switchgear, heaters, motor starters, etc.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance tasks, including preventive maintenance.
  • Support Maintenance Activities such as outages and plant projects during days off as needed.
  • Fully supports the use of a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) by displaying a proficiency in using the system, entering data consistent with fellow employees and dedication to the facility maintenance philosophy. Thoroughly records equipment problems on the CMMS work requests and documents maintenance actions taken on work order. Shows diligence in documenting resolution notes and parts/tools usage.
  • Maintains assigned tools and materials.
  • Collect and analyze “trending” information to evaluate equipment performance and to forecast possible equipment failures.
  • Perform routine evaluations of, cooling tower, demineralizer, and RO unit water chemistry and make necessary changes to chemical feed systems to ensure continued plant operation (as applicable).
  • Draws samples of water for laboratory analysis; performs routine chemical analyses of water undergoing treatment in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Perform system walkdowns/rounds and record findings and take action to correct issues as necessary.
  • Identify and resolve CEMS problems. Performing calibrations and gas bottle change outs.
  • Assist in repairing plant instrumentation and plant equipment.
  • Assist with development of Operations and Maintenance procedures.
  • Assist with calibration and repair plant instrumentation.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and inspecting programmable logic controllers, distributive control systems including control card replacement and wiring terminations.
  • Assist with administering of training program and complete training as assigned.
  • Identifies and resolves CEMS problems. Performs calibrations and gas bottle change outs.
  • Ensures water chemistry is within proper control ranges. Adjust water chemistry, as needed, by controlling chemical feed and/or blowdown rates and properly monitors overall chemistry program.
  • Operate demineralized water system in accordance with OEM and plant procedures and monitor demineralized water to ensure quality is within acceptable limits.
  • Participates in Outage planning and scheduling.
  • Performs general housekeeping and continuous improvement of the appearance of the facility including painting projects as required. Maintains the cleanliness of all areas of the plant and control room.
  • Communicates plant issues and keeps Management fully informed of unusual conditions, damaged equipment, and current job progress as the job relates to facility operations. This also applies when performing maintenance when either on or off shift.
  • Work shift hours, overtime, and irregular hours as needed to support reliable operation of the facility and maintenance activities.
  • Assist with performing Root Cause Analysis of failures.
  • Performs all work in compliance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, policies, and procedures such as: complying with proper equipment clearance procedure or Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, following proper event notification and communication protocols.
  • Complies with all applicable Company policies, procedures and code of ethics as well as all applicable governmental laws and regulations to include employment, safety and environmental standards and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
