About The Position

The Operations Director for the Detroit Free Press Marathon is responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of the marathon event operations, ensuring a safe, organized, and successful race weekend. This leadership role involves extensive planning, collaboration with stakeholders, and oversight of various operational areas to enhance the race experience for participants and spectators alike.

Requirements

  • Experience in event planning and project management.
  • Proven leadership skills in managing teams and external vendors.
  • Ability to manage budgets and financial planning for events.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the year-long production timeline and project plan for the marathon event.
  • Lead, manage, and oversee all operations staff and their teams, including various directors and coordinators.
  • Oversee the race warehouse, managing inventory and logistics of race equipment.
  • Manage the operations expense budget in partnership with the Race Director.
  • Collaborate with race-related staff and external stakeholders to ensure a successful race weekend.
  • Coordinate volunteer recruitment and management for operational areas on race day.
  • Produce relevant reports on project progression, budget forecasts, and registration trends.
  • Lead the Safety & Security cross-agency team, ensuring preparedness for race day.
  • Prepare and oversee all relevant operations documentation and maps.
  • Plan and coordinate the post-race plan to restore event areas and manage equipment return.
