About The Position

The Role The Operations Build Technician supports day‑to‑day operations and build execution for advanced battery cell manufacturing processes at GM’s Battery Cell Development Center (BCDC). This hands‑on role performs equipment operation, process setup, material preparation, troubleshooting, quality checks, and documentation to enable safe, consistent, and high‑quality development builds. Technicians work closely with engineering and industrialization, manufacturing engineering, quality, and maintenance teams to support new technologies, launch activities, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • 1–3+ years of manufacturing, operations, or technical experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands‑on experience with industrial equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow standardized work instructions and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with basic measurements, inspection tools, and data entry.
  • Ability to work off‑shifts, weekends, or holidays as business needs require.
  • Ability to wear PPE (safety glasses, gloves, hard hat, ear protection, safety shoes, clean room suits, respirators if required).
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, dynamic development environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in lithium‑ion cell manufacturing (slurry/mixing, coating, calendaring, stacking/assembly, formation, EOL testing).
  • Experience in development, pilot, or startup environments.
  • Experience with EV/high‑voltage safety and lithium‑ion manufacturing hazards.
  • Exposure to Automation, robotics, or AMR integration.
  • Knowledge of Built-in-Quality, Lean, or GMS principles.
  • Red X, DFSS, DOE, Lean, or CIP training or certifications.
  • Experience with process troubleshooting and equipment adjustments

Responsibilities

  • Follow all GM safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use required PPE and maintain safe operating conditions at all times.
  • Participate in safety checks, audits, and incident investigations.
  • Support hazardous materials handling and emergency response readiness.
  • Operate equipment and perform build activities across slurry/mixing, coating, calendaring, assembly, formation, and end‑of‑line testing.
  • Execute material prep, machine setup, parameter verification, and process start‑up/shut‑down.
  • Monitor equipment performance and respond quickly to issues or abnormalities.
  • Complete JES/TIS/SOP steps accurately and escalate concerns as needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and compliant work areas.
  • Assist engineering teams with equipment commissioning, testing, and validation.
  • Support process trials, capability studies, and data collection for development builds.
  • Improve documentation (JES/TIS/SOPs, PFDs, PADs, PCPs) through updates and feedback.
  • Help implement process changes, upgrades, or new technology integration.
  • Perform in‑process inspections, measurements, and data recording.
  • Identify quality concerns and assist with root-cause troubleshooting.
  • Support Built‑in‑Quality activities and containment when required.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives using GMS principles.
  • Document observations and lessons learned to support future builds.
  • Work closely with operations, engineering, maintenance, and quality teams to resolve issues.
  • Support supplier equipment acceptance, integration, or trials as needed.
  • Communicate clearly across shifts to maintain continuity and process stability.
