About The Position

We have an exciting opportunity for a Bridge Tunnel Operations Crewmember to play a key role in traffic incident management and ensure the safety of travelers in our bridge tunnel facility. In this position, you’ll enjoy a mix of responsibility and autonomy while contributing to the smooth operation of the facility. Your duties will include vehicle inspections, facility security, and managing traffic to keep things running safely and efficiently. You’ll also have the chance to learn and grow through paid training, including certification in DOT standards and CPR. What a Day in the Life Looks Like: Your day starts by verifying your assigned station, ensuring you’re equipped with everything you need. After a quick safety briefing, you’ll inspect equipment, complete necessary paperwork, and manage traffic flow- stopping vehicles as needed to keep operations smooth. Throughout your shift, you’ll monitor safety, work independently, and perform equipment checks as necessary. At the end of your shift, you’ll clean your station and get ready to hand over to your relief crew. The schedule for this position is 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts, with overtime available. First shift, 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM, second shift, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, or third shift from 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM. Shifts are only available based on need at the time of hire. Requirements

  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, and be able to lift and carry 50lbs
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and commitment to safety
  • Willingness to complete paid training, including certifications
  • Ability to handle traffic control and occasional vehicle inspections
  • Virginia Driver's License (in good standing).
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - strongly desired.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of traffic control operations, rules, and procedures
  • Knowledge of Hampton Roads Interstate and local roadways.
  • Strong command of the English language and ability to communicate both in writing and verbally; bilingualism in Spanish is an asset.
  • Experience in radio and phone communications.
  • General working knowledge of vehicle maintenance.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) to three (3) years of experience directing and controlling traffic, conducting and documenting vehicle inspections.
  • Capable of multitasking and working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Computer literate; Windows-based application and Apple devices experience.
  • Schedule flexibility.
  • Field experience.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor inspection stations, stop and inspect vehicles for compliance (over-height, hazardous materials, safety/security threats), document findings, and notify supervisors and Control Room staff.
  • Provide security and traffic management, including directing vehicles with appropriate techniques (signals, whistles, paddles) and standing watch at assigned locations to ensure safety.
  • Assist state/local police, fire, rescue, and other emergency responders in incidents and routine operations. Provide traffic control, tunnel evacuations, and roadside assistance (tire changes, battery jumps, fuel, debris removal).
  • Patrol facilities, tunnels, and surrounding roadways; inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment; report hazards or deficiencies; and perform light housekeeping to maintain a safe environment.
  • Operate and maintain company vehicles (SUVs, vans, heavy-duty pickups with arrow boards) and equipment, including radios, computers, and incident response trailers.
  • Respond to motorists and coworkers with clear, professional communication and provide accurate information and assistance.
  • Perform light to moderate manual labor (standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, prolonged walking/standing in adverse conditions).
