About The Position

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician at the Waterside Power Project is a temp-to-hire position that plays a hands-on role in operating and maintaining a 70 MW simple-cycle, fast-start, peaking power plant. This position involves performing turbine and auxiliary system operations, inspections, and routine maintenance while following all safety and environmental protocols. The Technician ensures the plant is ready to respond quickly to regional electricity demand, supporting grid reliability and operational stability.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions related to the assigned area, typically acquired through four years of high school. An Associate degree in power plant technology, a related technical field, or engineering is preferred. Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Hands-on experience in operating and maintaining gas turbines, auxiliary systems, and other power generation equipment, with a focus on rapid-start, peaking plant operations.
  • Proficient in turbine startup, shutdown, and routine mechanical operations, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems at a technician or journeyman level.
  • Skilled in disassembling, inspecting, and reassembling plant components such as pumps, valves, and turbine-generator parts, including experience with microprocessor-based control and electronic systems.
  • Strong knowledge of turbine operation principles, plant instrumentation, electrical systems, and process controls, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documentation, including blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and operational manuals, while maintaining accurate operational and maintenance records.
  • Knowledgeable of safety protocols and regulatory compliance, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), OSHA standards, and environmental regulations relevant to fuel-oil-fired, simple-cycle peaking facilities.
  • Capable of effectively supporting cross-functional teams and contractors, assisting with maintenance, preventive programs, and operational tasks under the direction of senior staff.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with clear technical communication and documentation abilities to identify issues, implement corrective actions, and support fast-response plant operations.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Perform controlled startup and shutdown of GE TM2500 combustion turbine units and auxiliary systems, operating from either the DCS or field, to safely bring turbines online or offline for normal and emergency conditions.
  • Conduct routine facility rounds to visually inspect turbines, auxiliaries, and support systems, identifying potential malfunctions or abnormal operating conditions.
  • Operate and monitor major plant auxiliaries, including air compressors, generator cooling systems, demineralized water systems, fuel handling systems, and condensers, ensuring reliable performance under varying load conditions.
  • Adjust turbine and auxiliary operating parameters to maintain safe, efficient, and economical operation during rapid-start or peak-demand events, including manual operation if required.
  • Maintain detailed operational logs and records, documenting turbine performance, system irregularities, and corrective actions for reporting to the shift supervisor.
  • Prepare equipment for service and follow all safety and environmental protocols to ensure compliance with OSHA and facility standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs within personal skill level, including inspection, lubrication, and work on electrical or mechanical systems such as motor controllers, variable speed drives, and UPS units.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance programs by supporting scheduled maintenance, tracking spare parts usage, and verifying inventory levels to maximize turbine availability.
  • Monitor operational data, including temperature, vibration, fuel flow, pressure, and run-time hours, using meters, gauges, and automated monitoring systems to detect early signs of equipment issues.
  • Conduct hands-on mechanical inspections, listening for unusual sounds, checking for wear, and performing minor adjustments to prevent operational disruptions.
  • Troubleshoot basic mechanical, electrical, or control system faults and perform repairs or adjustments under established guidelines.
  • Operate facility vehicles and support equipment, including boom trucks, forklifts, flatbed trucks, and other utility vehicles, to assist with equipment movement, maintenance, and operational tasks.
  • Recognize unsafe conditions or work practices, take corrective actions within the technician’s authority, support scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and notify supervisors to maintain a safe work environment and overall plant reliability.
  • Fulfill other tasks as assigned, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of plant operations.
