About The Position

Operating Room Technician Specialty assists in the performance of surgical procedures in hospital operating rooms for key specialty service lines identified by hospital management, including but not limited to the Cardiovascular, Transplant and Neuro service lines. Employees are responsible for preparation of operating rooms for surgical procedures; maintaining operational readiness of specialized equipment; serving as scrub tech during operations, and maintenance of operating room instruments and equipment following surgery. Emphasis of the work is in participation as a member of a surgical team assisting the professional staff in various operating room procedures and techniques. Work is differentiated from Operating Room Technician 1 and 2 by participation on identified specialty service line teams, which is documented by completing a competency checklist in operative procedures performed under that service line and maintenance and use of special equipment under that service line. Incumbents are required to exercise particular care in the observation of aseptic techniques and sterilization procedures in preparing and maintaining surgical equipment and supplies. Supervision is received from the professional, medical and nursing staff through constant observation and evaluation of work in progress for adherence to prescribed techniques and procedures.

Requirements

  • Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • High School diploma is required.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work accurately while meeting multiple deadlines.

  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications.
  • Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the clinical area.
  • Completion of Operating Room Technician Competency Assessment and specialty training by JHS is required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist required within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the inspection and indicated cleaning of the room prior to the procedure.
  • Assists in collection of necessary equipment and supplies utilizing the surgeon's procedure card. Maintains aseptic technique throughout all phases of work.
  • Assembles instruments and supplies on table and mayo stand.
  • Performs counts with the circulating nurse.
  • Assists in the draping of the operative site.
  • Assists surgeon and scrub nurse; anticipates and supplies the needs of the surgeon with instruments, sutures and sponges throughout the procedure.
  • Assumes responsibility for the identification and maintenance of specimens after release from the surgeon until release to the circulating nurse. Identifies medications on sterile table according to policy and procedure.
  • Utilizes safety measures for patient, self and other team members in the handling of sharps, cautery and other equipment.
  • Uses specialized equipment: Cauterizes; Scopes; Drills, etc.
  • Communicates complete report to relief.
  • Accounts for and removes all instruments from sterile field.
  • Removes drapes from the patient depositing disposable and cloth in the proper bag.
  • Decontaminates instruments and handles supplies from sterile set-up.
  • Assists, when necessary, in the transfer of patient to recovery room bed.
  • Assists in the total clean-up and readiness of the room for another procedure.
  • Reports broken and damage equipment to the circulating nurse.
  • Prepares for "STAT" emergency rapidly and accurately Remains in assigned room until assignment is changed.
  • Demonstrates use of intermediate knowledge of anatomy and physiology, safety, sterilization and instrumentation.
  • Communicates via the chain of command.
  • Performs related tasks as directed.
