About The Position

The Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care while ensuring adherence to established policies and guidelines. The RN collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to influence care outcomes and is accountable for maintaining the sterility of the surgical field and the safety of the patient throughout the perioperative experience.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Proficiency in English language (written and spoken).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.

Nice To Haves

  • 3-5 years of recent Operating Room experience preferred.
  • National Certification in nursing preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Understanding of sterile processes utilized in the operating room.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver fundamental knowledge-based care to assigned patients.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care based on age-specific components.
  • Coordinate care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction.
  • Administer medications and procedures according to established policies and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to influence care outcomes.
  • Maintain knowledge of current AORN Standards and VHA Directives.
  • Ensure sterility of the surgical field and safe use of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Perform counting procedures to prevent unintended retained surgical items.
  • Participate in the Time Out process to ensure correct site and side for surgery.
  • Manage patient specimens appropriately and document all care provided in the electronic health record.
  • Be on-call during off hours for emergency procedures.
