About The Position

Summary of Role The OR Lead will provide full-service support to the entire operating room team. This role independently manages the daily operational functions of the operating room, focusing on efficient use of rooms, equipment, and team members to keep cases progressing without delay. Effective communication with perioperative lead is essential.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school for surgical technology or nursing
  • BLS
  • 1 year of operating room experience at TOSC
  • Experience mentoring and leading others, including staff selection
  • Strong technology skills including EMR
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision, prioritize work by importance, and work effectively under stress
  • Must be able to take action or make sound decisions on the spot, sometimes with incomplete information
  • Able and willing to step in whenever necessary to handle additional duties
  • Extreme flexibility and the ability to multitask across many different arenas
  • Ability to anticipate needs, think proactively and systemically, and to prioritize effectively

  • Knowledge of equipment used to deliver patient care in the OR
  • Understanding of related procedures including scheduling

Responsibilities

  • Work as a leader within the facility
  • Perform ancillary audits, projects, or other duties as designated
  • Participate in QAPI studies and meetings
  • Participate in corrective action conversations and communication of steps being taken with the OR Supervisor
  • Fulfill staffing role as assigned/needed
  • Project positivity with a “can do” attitude at all times
  • Approve payroll for assigned teammates
  • Complete performance reviews timely
  • Approve vacation time
  • Develop 6 week schedules timely
  • Functions as an active problem solver
  • Manage and facilitate patient and procedure flow through the OR and ensure the provision of high-quality patient care on a day-to-day basis
  • Monitor daily OR schedule, expediting procedures as necessary, communicating changes and needs to other TOSC departments
  • Monitor OR & SPD staff throughout the day
  • Provide constructive feedback to team members, write and share performance improvement plans as necessary, and escalate situations to OR Supervisor as warranted.
  • Assume responsibility for daily operations of the OR during assigned shift as day lead
  • Monitor patient flow through the OR and procedure room areas and anticipate staffing needs
  • Review tentative OR schedule 2-3 days in advance and anticipate changes in staffing needs
  • Achieve efficiency by adding staff on higher census days and to fill vacancies; decrease staff on lower census days or reassign staff to ensure productivity
  • Monitor / assist with lunch and break relief
  • Complete daily staff assignments for the following day and post in OR
  • Approve staff departures before end of shift after ensuring appropriate tasks are completed, e.g., future cases are pulled
  • Facilitate/expedite OR schedule to keep cases timely
  • Ensure SPD has information that is relevant to facilitate the flow of their day.
  • Monitor changes in OR schedule such as delays and early starts during assigned shift as day lead
  • Consistently communicates these changes to OR, preop, and post-op team members
  • Adjust procedures as appropriate
  • Inform physicians of delays, page late physicians, verify patient arrivals, monitor case start times and physician arrivals
  • Approve add-on cases
  • Conduct morning reports
  • Keep Supervisor informed of system problems or patient related issues
  • Support administrative decisions in a mature, objective, and open manner
  • Monitor daily duties list and ensure all are completed prior to end of day
  • Maintain open, professional, and positive communication
  • Use multi-disciplinary communication to maintain and improve patient care
  • Utilize proper chain of command, maintain emotional control and diplomacy
  • Communicate facts to all stakeholders to avoid misunderstandings and undue stress
  • Maintain patient, employee, and company confidentiality
  • Assist with daily OR patient care activities, such as room turnovers and various float duties
  • Meet all requirements for staff nurse or surgical technologist, as outlined in those job descriptions
  • Give report to the next day lead at the end of the day to tie up issues and unfinished work
  • Other duties as assigned; position subject to change at any time
