At Guy F. Atkinson Construction, we pride ourselves on being a union contractor with a strong commitment to our employees, many of whom work in the field and are members of various labor unions. Our Operating Engineer positions, which include Apprentice, Journeyman, Foreman, and General Foreman roles, involve the operation of various machinery and equipment on construction job sites. These roles may also require preparing the site and assisting with other duties as assigned. The responsibilities of an Operating Engineer are diverse and critical to the success of our projects. Heavy Equipment Operators are expected to operate dozers, rollers, scrapers, forklifts, and other heavy machinery. Crane Operators not only run cranes but also ensure that all safety procedures are strictly followed. Additionally, Heavy Duty Repair personnel maintain and repair all types of heavy equipment, ensuring that our operations run smoothly. Plant Equipment Operators are responsible for operating portable rock plants, which includes maintaining and repairing the plant and running various types of equipment to support plant operations. Our work also involves Asphalt, Rock, Sand, and Gravel Plants, where operators must possess skills in electrical systems, welding, and conveyor belt repair, alongside operating support equipment such as loaders, dozers, excavators, skid-steers, and forklifts. Construction, Building, Soils, and Materials Inspectors perform inspections and testing for reinforced concrete, soils, structural masonry, prestressed concrete, structural steel, and welding. Dredging operations require the use of dredges to excavate waterways, while Surveyors layout high-rise buildings, roads, freeways, residential developments, dams, waterways, pipelines, airports, tunnels, and commercial and industrial developments. They perform specialized work including Boundaries, ALTA/ACSM Land Title Surveys, Deformation Surveys, and Hydrographic Surveys, and utilize advanced technology such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Scanners, Drones, Robotic Instruments, and Computers. Concrete Pump Operators are responsible for running and operating truck-mounted boom pumps, line pumps, and separate placing booms, controlling the operation of the pump and the output of concrete by directing the boom. In addition to these operational roles, the Operating Engineer Foreman will supervise, coordinate, and schedule a crew of operating engineers, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
