About The Position

The City of Painesville is seeking applicants for the position of Operating Engineer. This position consists of skilled and supervisory work, with the engineer operating mechanical equipment such as air compressors, generators, turbines, and steam boilers to provide utilities such as light, heat or power for buildings by performing the following duties. Work is performed on an assigned shift and consists of constantly observing the operating conditions of boilers, turbines, and associated equipment and manipulating controls to adjust conditions as necessary. The incumbent supervises the work of several subordinates. A prescribed procedure is followed in normal work situations, but in emergencies, the employee must exercise discretion and initiative in preventing an interruption of the power supply. Work is evaluated by a superior through a review of logs, charts and inspection. Special instructions are received to cover unusual situations; otherwise only general supervision is received.

Requirements

• high school diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by training in mechanics and electricity
• Stationary Engineer’s License issued by the State of Ohio
• experience in power plant operations
• 8th grade math level
• basic computer skills
• knowledge in the operation of high-pressure boilers, steam turbines and related auxiliary equipment
• knowledge of the hazards and of necessary safety precautions applicable to the work
• knowledge of electrical substations and associated equipment
• knowledge of SCADA controls
• skill and ability to analyze data relating to the operation of plant equipment and take appropriate action to improve operational efficiency
• skill and ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies
• skill and ability to recognize malfunctions in equipment and to determine proper corrective action
• skill and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work according to a prescribed routine
• skill and ability to maintain necessary records
• skill and ability to supervise the work of subordinates
