About The Position

As a 1st Shift Operating Engineer at JLL, you will support the reliable and efficient operation of client facilities across Northern Illinois by maintaining, repairing, and operating mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. This role plays a critical part in ensuring building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in alignment with JLL’s standards for operational excellence and client service. You will manage daily plant operations during first shift hours, support preventative maintenance programs, respond to service requests, and provide emergency backup coverage when needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in HVAC and electrical trades, including rooftop units
  • Minimum 4 years of experience supporting backup systems (generators and UPS)
  • Working knowledge of building automation systems, water treatment, and fire/life safety systems
  • Universal CFC certification (required)
  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with computers and office applications, including Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting tenant services, preventative maintenance, and work order management
  • Background in contracted maintenance and general building operations
  • Familiarity with building automation systems and control technologies
  • Knowledge of Northern Illinois building codes and regulatory requirements
  • Experience in data center operations or critical environments
  • Exposure to purchasing, inventory control, and vendor coordination

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems during 1st shift building operations
  • Perform preventative, corrective, and predictive maintenance on HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, pumps, valves, and associated equipment
  • Complete maintenance and repairs across mechanical, plumbing, structural, furniture, fire, life safety, and control systems
  • Respond to and resolve tenant service requests in a timely and customer-focused manner
  • Support and execute preventative maintenance programs in partnership with site leadership
  • Coordinate, oversee, and evaluate work performed by external contractors
  • Participate in emergency response activities, on-call rotations, and required safety and technical training
