About The Position

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Operating Engineer I for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Under the direction of the Manager of Engineering, the individual is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of Cogeneration power and heating Plants and auxiliary equipment entrusted to their care. The position involves operating and maintaining turbine generators, stationary steam boilers, and auxiliary equipment in the Busch Central Heating Plant, as well as making minor and emergency repairs to various types of generators, motors, pumps, turbines, and other equipment. The engineer will also be responsible for maintaining logs, records, and files of the Power Plants, ensuring compliance with regulations, and training new employees in the operation and routine of the Power Plant.

Requirements

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of stationary steam boilers, generators, turbines, chillers, pumps, and electrical distribution systems.
  • Must possess a New Jersey Red Seal License.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains turbine generators, stationary steam boilers, and auxiliary equipment in the Busch Central Heating Plant.
  • Makes minor and emergency repairs to various types of generators, motors, pumps, turbines, vacuum units, blowers, refrigeration equipment, cooling towers, gas compressors, air compressors, and chemical treatment systems.
  • Conducts comprehensive tests and takes readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperatures, steam flow, and other recordings.
  • Receives, stores, safeguards, and records the use of equipment, materials, and supplies, keeping the inventory system up to date.
  • Adds chemicals to treat steam, water, and fuel as prescribed.
  • Completes all paperwork in a timely manner and maintains logs, records, and files of the Power Plants.
  • Provides detailed information to relieving operators.
  • Inspects equipment continually and learns alternate ways of maintaining continuous operation.
  • Analyzes problems and takes corrective action when necessary, reporting conditions to the Manager of Engineering.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulations and is available for all Power emergencies.
  • Keeps the work area clean and neat.
  • Trains and familiarizes new employees in the operation and routine of the Power Plant.
