The City of Steamboat Springs is pleased to announce a job opening in our Parks & Recreation Department as an Open Space and Trails and Ski Area Maintenance Technician. Depending on the level of experience and certifications you have, pay and job requirements may vary as follows: Maintenance Technician I: $23.06 - $32.29/hr. Maintenance Technician II: $25.37 - $35.52/hr. Maintenance Technician III: $27.91 - $39.07/hr. As a member of the Parks and Recreation Department, the Open Space and Trails/Ski Maintenance Technician performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks and operates a variety of equipment in all phases of construction, repair, and maintenance of the City's trails and open spaces as well as Howelsen Hill Ski Area.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and 0-2 years’ experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or Any equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience operating medium to heavy equipment and small equipment and hand tools.
• Entry level knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
• Ability to learn to operate some of the listed tools and equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time
• Ability to work safely
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Additional skills and abilities include operation monitoring (watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is operating properly; active listening; critical thinking (using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems); control precision ( the ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions; multi-limb coordination; near vision, depth perception, problem sensitivity and rate control ( the ability to time your movements or the movement of a piece of equipment in anticipation of changes in speed and/or direction of a moving object or scene).
• Ability to perform some of the duties of the position without direction supervision.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
• Ability to learn Microsoft Office Suite Outlook, Kronos, NeoGov and other relevant systems.
• Valid Colorado Driver’s License
• CPR/1st Aid certification within three (3) months of employment
• Minimum of two of the following within 2 years of hire (must be relevant to specific position): CDL, Heavy Equipment Operator Training, Snow Making Maintenance and Repair Course, Colorado Sustainable Landscape Management Certification, Certified Welder, Pesticide Applicator License, Landscape Industry Certified Lawn Care Technician, Chainsaw safety course, Safe Ice Re-surfacer Operations, Basic Ice Arena Refrigeration Certification, Ice Making, Painting Technologies Certification, Entry-Level Snow Grooming, Colorado Ski Country USA Snowmaking and Slope Maintenance Conference Certificate of Completion, Rocky Mountain Lift Association Certificate of Completion, Cutter’s Camp for Snow Grooming and Terrain Park Maintenance, Ski Area Management Summit Series Leadership Development Bootcamp completion Certificate. Or other approved education and certifications.
• Required to participate in “on-call” rotation during non-scheduled hours year-round (winter and summer).

Responsibilities

• Leads and performs trail maintenance work on all hard and soft surface city trails.
• Utilizes a variety of tools and equipment.
• Is proficient in trail maintenance and construction duties, including trail brushing, clearing downed trees, erosion control, and tread restoration; maintains and constructs drainage systems, trail bridges, culverts, fences, signs, and gates.
• Is proficient in the operation and maintenance of the ski area, including customer service, signage, snowmaking systems, ski lifts, lift shacks, and Howelsen Hill lodge.
• May perform snowmaking duties including carrying and moving snowmaking hoses and cords, digging out snow guns, adjusting nucleators, and relocating snow guns.
• May serve as a ski patroller.
• Assists with and safely operates a variety of equipment including backhoe, loader, snow blowers, graders, snow cats, winch cat, etc. in performing job duties.
• Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections and fills out daily inspection sheets.
• Assists with and safely operates light to medium construction and maintenance equipment such a pickup truck, tractors, water trailers, riding mowers, hand mowers, tillers, aerators, snow blowers, sprayers, spreaders, weed trimmers, pruning tools, golf carts, trenchers, grinders and handheld tools for the appropriate projects.
• Assists with maintaining all grounds and facilities; including painting of facilities; plows and clears snow from sidewalks and trails; mows and maintains greens; weeds; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads; carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, aerating, watering, and the pest and weed control.
• Collects and disposes of trash; repairs and installs drainage structures, checks vehicles operated; performs related duties.
• Assists with determining the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water, and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
• Assists in the construction of new facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
• Assists with maintenance and repairs on sprinkler irrigation systems; installs or assists in installation of new sprinkler systems.
• Assists in disease and pest control and horticulture as requested or needed.
• Aerates, eradicates weeds and removes plants as needed or requested.
• Reports the necessity for replacements as observed.
• Assists in applying chemicals, fertilizers, and other hazardous materials following all safety precautions.
• Assists with maintaining a variety of records relating to maintenance, construction, and inspection of parks systems.
• Ensures equipment is maintained per fleet policy.
• Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
• Assists in preparations, setup, and cleanup of special events which may require flexed scheduling and working on holidays.
• Cooperates with co-workers, supervisor, and other departments to foster the spirit of a team environment.
• Completes and submits daily work reports, work orders, and payroll timesheets in an accurate and timely manner.
• Promotes a culture of safety in the workplace and reports safety hazards when observed.
• Provides courteous customer service; responds to questions and inquiries from the public.
