The New York Times is seeking a skilled journalist to join its Visual Investigations team, which is dedicated to accountability journalism. This role is crucial for seizing news moments and exploring a wide array of national and international topics. As the point person for the team on weekends, the successful candidate will operate autonomously, making sound journalistic decisions during breaking news situations. The position requires a proven track record in conducting investigations, cultivating sources, analyzing visuals, and uncovering new information. The focus will be on ambitious investigative and explanatory work, primarily on competitive news stories, as well as longer-term projects. The ideal candidate will take the initiative on major stories, developing exclusive angles and utilizing open-source skills to problem-solve and reveal new insights. They will be adept at sourcing audio-visual evidence from various platforms, geo- and chronolocating evidence, and analyzing satellite imagery and data. The role also involves pitching reporting opportunities and jumping on breaking news stories, either independently or in collaboration with colleagues across the team and the wider newsroom. A strong commitment to journalistic independence and the mission of The New York Times is essential. This is a full-time hybrid position based in New York, requiring regular office attendance each week. The expected shift is either Wednesday to Sunday or Saturday to Wednesday, subject to change.
