About The Position

The Department of Pediatrics (DOP) and the Precision Medicine Institute (PMI) are seeking a visionary and collaborative leader to serve as Director of Genetic Counselor (GC) Practice Development. The Director will provide department-wide leadership, playing a pivotal role in advancing clinical practice, championing faculty well-being, and leading initiatives to optimize the GC care model across diverse pediatric subspecialties. This position serves two distinct roles related to GCs in the Department: 1) to support the clinical activities of all GCs in the department (both those clinically based in the Section of Genetics and Metabolism and those working primarily in other sections); and 2) work with PMI and Department leadership to support strategic initiatives impacting the GC workforce. The Director will seek to foster excellence, equity, and professional growth for genetic counselors through collaborations with clinical, operational, and academic leaders across the Department and Children's Hospital Colorado system, addressing the unique needs of various GC care models and roles.

Requirements

  • MS Genetic Counseling degree from an accredited University program required.
  • Board certification by ABGC.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a GC required.
  • Current clinical activity practicing as a certified GC.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum Three (3) years of experience leading clinical programs or multidisciplinary teams.
  • Training or certification in quality improvement or process improvement projects (e.g., Lean, IHQSE).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams with vision, collaboration, and strategic foresight.

Responsibilities

  • Guide efforts to improve GC practice and workflows by building support from key partners, removing barriers that slow progress, and leading communication with GC faculty.
  • Share priorities and updates between GC providers and leaders in the Section, Department, Precision Medicine, and Hospital.
  • Represent GC faculty on committees within CHCO, CU Medicine, and the School of Medicine.
  • Work with leaders to review staff satisfaction feedback and create plans to address concerns.
  • Act as the main contact for operations staff from Genetics and other Sections that include GCs, helping coordinate project plans and follow-up.
  • Partner with operations managers and leaders to create, launch, and review new programs.
  • Work with Section leaders, Medical Directors, and Hospital teams to set staffing standards and ensure enough GCs are available.
  • Support GCs practicing at the top of their training.
  • Review scheduling practices to match service needs.
  • Develop fair measures of productivity across GC care models.
  • Coordinate with the Department of Pediatrics and Section of Genetics to improve access to genetic testing.
  • Partner with the Section Business Manager and CU Medicine Revenue Cycle team to improve billing practices, create consistent charting, and train GCs in best practices.
  • Work with Precision Medicine and the Precision Diagnostic Laboratory to share information about new services with GCs and clinical teams.
  • Support the career growth of GCs in partnership with the Section Head of Genetics & Metabolism.
  • Build and oversee mentoring programs to support the clinical, teaching, and academic goals of the GC team.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance to GCs across the Department to help them meet inpatient and outpatient care goals.
  • Partner with the Section Head and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs to support GC academic advancement and teaching opportunities.
  • Provide direct patient care as a practicing GC within the Department of Pediatrics.
