About The Position

The Department of Music at Smith College is seeking an Open Rank Professor of Music specializing in popular music for a tenured or tenure-track position starting in July 2025. The ideal candidate will be an experienced scholar and teacher with a strong commitment to undergraduate education and the ability to engage with a diverse student body. Responsibilities include teaching courses in popular music, cultural studies, and writing about music, as well as mentoring students and maintaining an active research agenda.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field expected at the time of appointment.
  • Record of publication commensurate with career stage.
  • Commitment to undergraduate education.

  • Experience in interdisciplinary scholarship.
  • Focus on issues of labor and class, race, and/or gender and sexuality.
  • Background in sound studies or disability studies.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in popular music and contribute to the Music department's core curriculum.
  • Mentor students through advising, independent studies, and honors theses.
  • Engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts.
  • Maintain an active program of research and scholarly publication.
  • Participate in department and college governance.
