About The Position

The University of Alabama at Birmingham ( UAB ) Heersink School of Medicine ( HSOM ) invites applications for an open rank/open tenure faculty position in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics ( BMG ). Highly qualified applicants are sought who have established a robust research program in structural biology. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program and to contribute to graduate and medical school teaching. A competitive compensation and startup package will be offered in accordance with the candidate’s qualifications. The BMG department in the UAB HSOM has a long history of promoting scientific and teaching excellence. Applications are particularly sought from investigators with expertise in structural biology and research programs focused on molecular mechanisms of cancer. We are particularly interested in candidates who complement and expand our existing research strengths in structural aspects of cell signaling, DNA synthesis and repair, transcriptional and post-transcriptional control of gene expression, chromatin, and epigenetic regulation. The Department offers a highly collaborative culture and new faculty are encouraged to participate in many strong UAB research centers , including the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center; the Center for Integrative Structural Biology; the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center; the Comprehensive Diabetes Center; the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Center; the UAB -HudsonAlpha Center for Genomic Medicine; and the Center for Clinical and Translational Science. The UAB Heersink SOM’s main campus is in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2023, UAB had more than 1,700 full-time faculty and almost 2,000 medical and graduate students, and the HSOM ranked 27th nationally in NIH research funding (12th among public institutions) in the US. UAB was named the Best Large Employer by Forbes in 2021. Driven by an intensely collaborative and entrepreneurial character, UAB is one of the leading economic engines of the State, with a nearly $4 billion budget and a statewide economic impact exceeding $7 billion annually. Birmingham is a cosmopolitan city at the heart of a metropolitan area with a population of 1.1 million people. It is a rich cultural center and progressive community with a low cost of living, moderate climate, and ample outdoor activities. Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. in a relevant field and a strong track record in research productivity.
