About The Position

The Department of Performing Arts at Emerson College invites applications for a Full-time faculty position in Directing. This is an Open Rank position, commensurate with experience, of Tenure (Associate or Full Professor), Tenure Track (Assistant Professor), or Artist-In-Residence (full-time, non-tenure-track). This position will teach in the area of Directing at the undergraduate or graduate levels, mentor student directors, and may direct one to two productions during each Emerson Stage season. The appointment begins August 20, 2026 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 20 & 21, 2026. Emerson College is the nation’s only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. It is located in the dynamic multi-cultural city of Boston in close proximity to major arts institutions, performing art venues, and research centers.

Requirements

• Minimum of 6 years of professional theatre directing experience.
• Demonstrate knowledge of areas of theatre training offered in the Performing Arts Department at Emerson College, including devised processes, physical theater, musical theater, and experimental theater.
• Experience teaching and mentoring students at the college-level or in a conservatory setting.
• Hold a terminal degree (MFA) or equivalent professional experience in the area of Directing.
• Active engagement in professional and artistic organizations, conferences, and networks related to performing and directing theater.
• Professional affiliation with The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC), or others.

Responsibilities

• Teach in the area of Directing at the undergraduate or graduate levels.
• Mentor student directors.
• Direct one to two productions during each Emerson Stage season.
