About The Position

The MUSC College of Medicine and MUSC Health are seeking a Board-certified Pathologist with appropriate clinical and academic interests and qualifications to provide outstanding clinical service while supporting the research and education missions of the Department of Pathology, who will also be a candidate for the administrative role of Pathology/Lab ICCE Chief. Faculty rank will be determined based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. The selected individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for their clinical and academic faculty responsibilities, which will comprise approximately 60% of their effort. The remaining 40% effort will be allocated to the administrative role of Pathology/Lab ICCE Chief. Integrated Centers of Clinical Excellence [ICCE] are the clinical delivery constructs of MUSC Health [MUSCH], each being led by a physician - an ICCE Chief - with demonstrated business and clinical expertise. The ICCE Chief reports to the System Chief Operating Officer [COO] of MUSCH and maintains a matrixed relationship with physician leaders at MUSCH affiliated organizations. In general, ICCE span all clinical delivery operations within MUSCH and its officially designated 'affiliations/partnerships.' The Pathology/Lab ICCE Chief is accountable for the strategic direction of the ICCE and overall performance [as it relates to the MUSCH organizational pillar goals]. Operational oversight of specialized programs and any ICCE-related administrative support is handled by the ICCE SAO [System Administrative Officer] who has a dyad relationship with the ICCE Chief. The Pathology/Lab ICCE Chief is responsible for the indirect leadership of approximately 700 enterprise-wide Pathology and Lab care team members via responsibility for and oversight of all areas of the MUSC Health Acute and Ambulatory Clinical and Pathology Laboratories including: Hematology Chemistry Coagulation Transfusion Services HLA Transplant Testing Microbiology Molecular Micro CytoGenetics & Genomics Specialty Labs- Hematology, Chemistry, Immunology Histology Cytology Pathology – both internal (University and Practice) and externally contracted (Practice)

Requirements

  • Board Certified in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology physician leader with dynamic business skillset and a demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team through influence and example; preference given to candidates with academic system expertise
  • Must be highly respected as a strategic and operational leader with a proven ability to manage and grow an integrated business unit within a highly matrixed organization
  • Expert financial and people management skills and a proven ability to excel in a leadership position with an emphasis on program growth
  • Experience with financial operations including but not limited to P&L management, budget and forecasting preparation, etc.
  • Strong communicator, being both assertive and encouraging to motivate and inspire others to achieve mutually beneficial relationships and the highest performance standards
  • Effective team builder and collaborator, with proven experience managing and working with and across physician and non-physician teams
  • Possesses entrepreneurial traits and is a positive leader with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Politically savvy, with a high tolerance for ambiguity and proven ability to work successfully in a highly matrixed organization

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring program development, financial performance, growth, patient access, appropriateness of care, and other KPIs within their ICCE meet or exceed annually established pillar goals.
  • Partners with MUSCH Strategic Planning office to develop a multi-year strategic plan and an aligned supportive operational plan
  • Leads overall clinical strategy development and an ICCE-specific provider recruitment strategy via collaboration with COM Chairs, MUSCP Leaders, Division CEOs and other key stakeholders
  • Supports affiliation and network development efforts as they relate to ICCE-specific expansion
  • Supports annual budget and capital planning activities through their active engagement
  • Drives initiative development and execution as it relates to advancing the ICCE performance
  • Supports initiatives to achieve the Baldrige award for performance excellence
  • Leads and evaluates operational efficiency, patient experience, clinical quality & practice improvement initiatives of patient care within ICCE
  • Identifies, prioritizes, and drives development of MUSC Ideal Care Plans with focus on achieving ever increasing adoption of safe practices within the ICCE to improve quality metrics; supports development of care plans across other ICCEs through sharing of best practices and subject matter expertise
  • Collaborates with community providers and leads referral relation activities related to ICCE specific initiatives to advance innovation of clinical delivery and drive value in population management
  • Helps monitor and drive patient experience across the ICCE and the broader MUSCH care network
  • Responsible for value-based initiatives and programs within ICCE
  • Continuously reviews efforts made to improve appropriateness of care
  • Develops and implements, in cooperation with other leaders across MUSC Health, patient care policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols, and periodically updates them as needed
  • Identifies opportunities for ICCE performance improvement from both clinical and administrative perspective and works toward enhancing performance to meet or exceed standards
  • Works with clinical operations leaders to continually review and improve care coordination and care delivery processes
  • Responds to requests from affiliate/partner clinical leaders and/or those of MUSCH's Affiliation and Network Development leadership team, to provide clinical guidance and expertise
  • Ensures timely scorecard updates for ICCE concerning organizational goals; develops action plans on Opportunities for Improvement [OFIs] within areas of responsibility
  • Drives best practices for patient safety and a High Reliability Organization [HRO]; ensures for implementation of Just Culture principles and practices
  • Accountable for identifying the need and overseeing the appointment of medical director(s) within ICCE
  • Accountable for development, negotiation, and oversight of clinical service contracts
  • Facilitates professional development of medical directors within the ICCE, with emphasis on clinical, business, operational and leadership competencies
  • Actively engages in all discussions related to provider recruitment and retention for those clinicians practicing within the ICCE
  • Monitors ICCE provider utilization, productivity, access, and clinical outcomes as it relates to established benchmarks and KPIs; collaborates with providers' employing entities to provide feedback and mentoring
  • When requested, collaborates with affiliated organizational leaders to assist in ICCE associated provider relations-related activities
  • Mentors and coaches leaders; role models the organizational values
  • Ensures the leadership team provides a work environment that meets physician and care team members’ satisfaction and engagement goals
  • Accountable for overall financial performance and growth for ICCE, collaborating with other health system leaders to measure and drive improvements
  • Continuously reviews efforts made to improve care variation within ICCE, ensuring performance is in line with benchmarks
  • Helps monitor and drive access across the ICCE and the broader MUSCH network to drive growth
  • Participates in the health system's annual budgeting and forecasting processes; leads annual capital review process for ICCE in alignment with strategic growth plans and overall capital budget allotment
  • Monitors and drives improvements in Finance Pillar KPIs, as measured by organizational scorecard
  • Recommends methods by which the most economical use of equipment and supplies can be assured without compromising patient care / treatment
  • Supports networking and relationship development of referring providers; focused on providing rapid access to tertiary and quaternary care
  • Engages with system leaders in developing progressive payor relationships and performance programs as they relate to the ICCE clinical programs
  • Creates and maintains an environment that supports education, research, and scholarly activity across MUSCH, collaborating with MUSC COM Department Chairs and leadership to align academic priorities and initiatives within and across ICCE
  • Adheres to the mechanism(s) that integrate ICCE clinical activities and priorities with MUSC research and education initiatives
