The International Institute of Buffalo is seeking S'gaw Karen and/or Pwo Karen interpreters to work as independent contractors. The role involves providing interpretation services in various settings, ensuring accurate communication between English-speaking individuals and those who speak Karen. Candidates must be proficient in both languages and possess strong communication skills, while adhering to ethical standards and confidentiality regulations.

  • Interpret English to Karen and Karen to English for limited English proficient patients, clients, and students.
  • Interpret conversations, meetings, and events accurately and impartially while adhering to the Interpreter's Code of Ethics.
  • Provide language support in settings such as medical appointments, legal proceedings, social services, and educational environments.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations no matter the setting or topic discussed.
  • Attentively manage your own schedule and alert the Institute of any sudden changes.
  • Inform the Institute as soon as possible whether you accept or decline assignments.
  • Bill the Institute in a timely manner for all interpreting services rendered to its customers.
  • Must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent from country of origin.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must live in the greater Buffalo-Niagara metro region (US-side).
  • Must be willing and able to travel to onsite assignments.
  • Must be willing and able to utilize public transportation effectively if Contractor does not own a vehicle.
  • Professional or native level proficiency in Karen is essential.
  • Willing to self-study to build necessary knowledge of medical, legal, or educational terminology for accurate interpretation in a variety of settings.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations to ensure compliance when handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to interpret ethically.
  • Excellent communication skills and cultural sensitivity for effective language support.
  • If you also speak Burmese or Karenni, that is a plus, but not required.
