Meta is seeking a Mechanical Engineer experienced in the design and construction of Critical Facilities to become a part of our onsite Data Center Design Engineering team. Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates. Building and operating reliable and efficient data centers is essential to support the growth of Meta. The Design Engineering team collaborates with all key stakeholders to ensure engineering and design of our data centers incorporate considerations from micro-levels (servers and IT equipment design requirements) to macro-levels (mechanical cooling and power distribution options) to enable maximum efficiency and reliability of our compute infrastructure. As an integral part of the onsite team, you will support the design and onsite construction administration as a Design Owner Representative, Mechanical Design Engineer and subject matter expert. The role requires collaboration with multiple internal partner teams such as Construction, Quality, Safety, and Facility Operations, as well as external partners such as engineering consultants, general contractors, and regulatory agencies to deliver data center capacity safely, on time, within budget, and of high quality. This position is full-time, on project site, requiring engagement with stakeholders and providing directional guidance aligned with the pace of dynamic fast-tracked construction.

  • Collaborate with the Meta Design Engineering team and EoR to ensure design deliverables such as drawing sets, shop drawings, requests for information, submittals, studies, audits, calculations and reports meet requirements and service level agreements outlined in EoR performance requirements
  • Collaborate with Design and Delivery teams, Engineer of Record (EoR), contractors, and regulatory agencies to resolve issues involving safety, quality, cost, schedule, proposed changes, value engineering proposals, and other design related issues
  • Drive and hold teams accountable for design deliverables and engage on emerging requirements to ensure schedule milestones are met. Advise on opportunities to compress schedules wherever possible
  • Proactively anticipate and mitigate potential design quality issues. Monitor and resolve design quality issues to ensure owner requirements are met
  • Support design change cost estimates, provide insight on EoR contractual costs, review consultant team resource allocations and changes, and monitor / report on mechanical-related expenses
  • In collaboration with stakeholders, engage in deliberate, forward thinking to identify and mitigate risks. Contribute to the risk register
  • Participate in factory tests, onsite testing and commissioning and other quality checks throughout the project life cycle and in partnership with cross-functional teams to ensure proper installation and commissioning of mechanical systems and integration with other critical systems
  • Liaise between internal teams, consultants and contractors across projects and campus to ensure transparency, situational awareness of status and way forward, and timely resolution of issues
  • Maintain current awareness of project knowledge repository, status, decision, and planning documents. Maintain accurate records and documentation. Provide regular project updates to internal stakeholders and information sharing, priorities, and feedback to EoR
  • Review and comment on mechanical design documents, specifications, and calculations
  • Provide technical expertise and oversight to ensure the design and construction meet the owner's requirements and industry standards for critical facility mechanical systems including Manufactured/Owner Furnished Equipment (M/OFE)
  • Collaborate with other technical disciplines as required to ensure fully functioning, integrated systems. Actively guide Cross-Discipline technical interactions within Meta Design Engineering team and EoR to ensure multi-disciplinary team alignment
  • Develop and support onboarding of new teammates to ensure continuity of design support
  • Develop cross discipline knowledge to ensure continuity and build breadth and depth of the overall field design team
  • In partnership with teammates, serve as mechanical subject matter expert, maintain situational awareness of campus and project level priorities and provide timely resolution of existing and emergent issues
  • Provide deliberate and thoughtful development and embedment of lessons learned for design improvements of inflight and future products
  • Chair Mechanical Discipline Led Design, Delivery & Quality on-site meetings to facilitate resolution of critical issues related to design
  • Manage multi-disciplinary work, occasionally non-mechanical related, as needed to support the project and Meta business objectives
  • Collaborate and support in innovating Design-Construction technology and processes
  • Close collaboration and engagement with the Quality Team, with focus on area walk downs, critical benchmarks, systems integration and operation, issue resolution, TAB, Commissioning Script review and implementation, providing technical support and guidance on Design related matters
  • Support Facilities Engineering and Operations Team on knowledge sharing, technical guidance and system operation of Design throughout the project schedule
  • As needed, support program initiatives or projects outside of the current onsite project
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • 10+ years of professional experience in mission critical building design, construction, and/or operations
  • Knowledge depth (SME) of HVAC systems including Evaporative Systems, Chilled/Condenser Water/Liquid Cooled Systems, Air Handling Systems Hot/Cold aisle containment, data center rack/row level liquid cooling designs/technologies, and Building Management System/Controls Automation
  • Knowledge of Plumbing systems including Water Treatment, Pumping Systems and Distribution, Sanitary/Waste Systems, and Storm Drainage Systems
  • Knowledge of Fire Protection/Fire Alarm systems such as Early Warning/Detection Systems, Double Interlock Pre-Action, and Wet Pipe Systems
  • Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including UMC, NFPA, ASHRAE, UBC, UMC and LEED
  • Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Project Management Experience
  • Effective presentation and communication to peers, stakeholders and leadership
  • Fluent in English
  • Experience on liquid cooling mission critical facilities
  • Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Revit, Visio, Bluebeam software, Oracle P6, Google suite, FLOTHERM or AFT Fathom
  • Experience with construction and cost estimating processes
  • Experience with local/state code compliance
