Primary Purpose: Assists teacher in providing the immediate needs of the student to see that medical aid is provided when necessary, and to see that health records are kept. Qualifications: Education/Certification: High school diploma CPR Certification Interest in and an understanding of children and adolescents Respect for confidentiality of information Ability to accept and utilize nursing supervision and consultation Typing and computer skills preferred Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills Ability to use personal computer and software to develop database and do word processing Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) Experience: One year in health-related positions; experience working with school-age children (preferred). Major Responsibilities and Duties: Accounting: Health Services Provide basic first aid. Dispensing prescription medications, as needed, under supervision of the school nurse. Provide care for medical technology, which may include tracheostomy care, gastrostomy care and feeding, seizure care, and/or diabetes care all under the supervision of the school nurse. Maintain health records. Practice clinical skills and duties as specified by the school nurse. Practice in health screenings; e.g. vision, hearing, postural screenings Daily log documentation. Contact parents or other agencies as appropriate. Assist in personal daily needs which may include toileting and diapering. Other duties as assigned by the school nurse and/or principal. Safety Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care. Keep the classroom clean and sanitary. Clerical Record information on student health records Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required Prepare correspondence, reports and records Request supplies as needed. Compliance Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the health services area. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. Maintain confidentiality. Other Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
