About The Position

The Oncology Nurse oversees and delivers the care of the patient with hematologic/oncologic diagnoses within the statues of the Arizona State Nurse Practice Act. Works with and follows the clinical direction of the Medical Oncologist/Hematologist to provide cancer treatment care.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Nursing or graduate of a Nursing Diploma program
  • Chemotherapy certification
  • Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Current and valid Arizona RN License or compact license
  • Must complete 12 hours of cancer-related continuing education every calendar year or maintain a current oncology nursing certification including but not limited to: Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP) Advanced Oncology Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (AOCNS) Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse (AOCN) Blood & Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse (BMTCN) Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN)
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN)

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years as an Oncology RN
  • Clinical Trials Research Coordinator Training
  • Oncology Certified RN
  • Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) certification

Responsibilities

  • Assessing Patients
  • Collects data and documents information within defined time frame
  • Interprets clinical data to identify needs and evaluate responses
  • Collects and documents pertinent data relative to patient care needs
  • Planning Care
  • Participates in identifying needs and delegating patient care
  • Provides feedback to evaluate procedures
  • Providing Care
  • Reviews treatment prescription for clarity and ensures processing is complete
  • Assures that simulation information is documented consistent with policy
  • Assists said physician(s) with exams and other procedures as necessary
  • Provides care and treatment to assigned patients consistent with policy
  • Responsible for administering antibiotics, blood transfusions, and other medication as ordered
  • Performs CLIA waived lab tests and obtains specimens
  • Performs proficiency testing and runs controls for waived tests
  • Performs venipuncture
  • Manage patient symptoms that result from chemotherapy treatment under the direction of the physician(s)
  • Responsible for the continued monitoring and following the administration of medication
  • Responsible for documenting all patient interactions
  • Required to assess and educate patients in a detailed fashion
  • Coordination of Care
  • Shares information in team conferences and interacts with employees, physicians and patients in a positive and informative manner
  • Shares patient-related information to facilitate making decisions in the best interest of the patient
  • Patient Education and Satisfaction
  • Identifies patient learning needs and determines teaching method, using appropriate resources
  • Provides education to the patient / significant others and verbally assures understanding
  • Scripts as necessary for the patient
  • Proactively answers all questions and gives informative, easy to understand instructions
