About The Position

The Oncology Genetic Counselor Assistant supports the Licensed Genetic Counselor in providing risk assessment and genetic education services to oncology patients and their families. This role involves patient intake, data management, administrative support, and coordination of genetic testing processes. The assistant ensures efficient clinic operations while maintaining a high level of patient care, confidentiality, and ethical standards. Responsible for performing duties in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Health Science, or other related field.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience in a clinical or medical setting. An equivalent combination of education/certification and realized competencies may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in patient intake by collecting personal and family health histories related to cancer, preparing charts for Genetic Counselor, and acquiring personal and family member genetic testing records.
  • Assist in triaging patient referrals and streamlining patient care workflow, such as prior authorization and informed consent documentation.
  • Schedule patient appointments, coordinate referrals, and manage follow-up communications.
  • Coordinate release of records from outside medical institutions, as needed.
  • Enter and maintain accurate patient information in databases and EHR systems.
  • Provide support to patients regarding billing, insurance denials and explanation of benefits.
  • Place orders in genetic testing lab portals.
  • Prepare genetic testing kits, handle specimen coordination, and ensure proper documentation.
  • Communicate with genetic testing laboratories to track test orders and results.
  • Support Genetic Counselor with research, literature reviews, and educational material preparation.
  • Perform general administrative tasks such as phone support, managing shared email, document scanning, and record keeping.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities and team meetings, as required.
  • Maintain and update standard of procedure documents for various institution/clinic processes and workflows, as appropriate.
