The Oncology Data Specialist is responsible for the daily abstraction of cancer cases into the cancer registry database. This includes running and resolving EDITs prior to submission of cases to the State Central Registry and NCDB, utilizing CoC and State Cancer Registry data standards to determine reportable cases, and abstracting cases completely whenever possible. The specialist must maintain a log of all records, submit cases to the State Central Registry when requested, and process case finding and follow-up duties. Compliance with company policies, including HIPAA, is essential, as is maintaining a knowledge base of relevant cancer staging and coding manuals.

  • Perform daily abstraction of cancer cases into the cancer registry database.
  • Run and resolve EDIT's prior to submission of cases to the State Central Registry and NCDB.
  • Utilize CoC and State Cancer Registry data standards and coding instructions to determine all reportable cases.
  • Abstract cases completely, requesting additional treatment data from managing physicians when necessary.
  • Abstract cases within six months from the first date of first contact.
  • Maintain a log to document the abstraction of all records and non-reportable cases.
  • Submit cases to the State Central Registry if requested.
  • Process case finding, follow-up, and other registry duties.
  • Maintain the suspense system if required.
  • Enter follow-up and/or update information on patients who have been re-admitted to the hospital.
  • Perform duties in compliance with company policies and procedures, including HIPAA.
  • Maintain knowledge of ICD-O, AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, and other relevant databases and standards.
  • Certified Oncology Data Specialist with 3 years of ODS credentials.
  • 3 years of current abstracting experience.
  • 97% abstracting quality score required.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and strong time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken forms.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission standards and HIPAA-HITECH regulations.
  • Full-time position with expected hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Occasional long hours and weekend work may be required.
