About The Position

The On-Site Spanish/English Medical Interpreter at Stony Brook Medicine plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between healthcare providers and limited English proficient (LEP) patients. This position involves providing accurate interpretation and translation of medical information, advocating for LEP families, and ensuring they receive professional language services during healthcare encounters. The interpreter is responsible for educating patients and staff about language assistance services, maintaining logs of interpretation encounters, and adhering to ethical standards in medical interpretation.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree.
• At least 3 years of patient-facing experience in a Hospital/Healthcare setting or 2 years of Interpreter experience.
• Completion of a 40 hour or more Medical Interpreter program.
• Demonstrated fluency and proficiency in both English and Spanish.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Medical Terminology in English and Spanish.

Responsibilities

• Review daily LEP inpatient report and round on emergency department patients/inpatients to educate patients/families about free language assistance services.
• Assist in the education of SBUH staff about language assistance services and how to access and correctly use available resources.
• Perform clear, accurate interpreting services for LEP patients, families, and hospital visitors in a professional manner.
• Maintain a log with the interpretation encounters completed during each shift.
• Translate general patient/family materials as needed.
• Assist with auditing charts on units and in EMR to ensure compliance with regulatory offices.
• Keep self-current by attending professional meetings, webinars, and continuing education sessions.
