About The Position

The On-Call Campus Safety Ambassador at the University of California, Santa Cruz, plays a crucial role in maintaining safety and security on campus. This position is designed to protect and guard university property while ensuring the safety of the UCSC community, including students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The Campus Safety Ambassadors are tasked with monitoring and controlling access to restricted areas, conducting inspections to prevent hazards such as fires and accidents, and providing assistance to visitors by answering questions regarding building layouts and campus facilities. Under the supervision of the Campus Security Manager, these ambassadors are responsible for ensuring community safety during their assigned shifts, which can vary in length from 4 to 8 hours and may occur any day of the week, as the unit operates continuously throughout the week. The role requires a proactive approach to security, including making inspection rounds on foot and in vehicles, checking doors and windows to ensure they are secured, and reporting any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities. Campus Safety Ambassadors serve as a communication link between the campus community and law enforcement, ensuring that any incidents or emergencies are promptly reported and addressed. This position is classified as a non-scheduled provisional role, meaning that there are no guaranteed hours, and work is offered based on departmental needs. In addition to security duties, the Campus Safety Ambassadors are responsible for completing logs for each shift, monitoring emails, preparing incident reports, and participating in regular emergency drills. The position requires a high level of interaction with the public, necessitating strong communication skills and the ability to handle various situations professionally and effectively. The role is part-time, with a budgeted salary of $25.27 per hour, and is not eligible for benefits. The appointment is limited, with an end date of five months from the date of hire, although there is a possibility of extension based on departmental needs.
