About The Position

We are currently hiring On-Call Biologists for multiple projects located across the entire state of California. S trong preference for candidates with the ability to work night shifts based on business needs. FLSA Status : Non-Exempt, Hourly Reports To: Project Manager I Job Type: On-Call, Variable-Time Compensation: $22 - $35 per hour based on experience About Eocene Environmental Group: Our team has spent the past two decades providing environmental, utility vegetation management (UVM), software and sustainability services. We are fortunate to be a part of the Wright Service Corp. family, which has helped us establish a strong foundation for continued growth and success. Through a strategic alignment of values and goals, four Wright Service Corp. entities joined and integrated into one, operating as Eocene Environmental Group. These four entities are: Forestry & Utility Division Environmental Division Technology & Innovation Division Sustainability Division JOB SUMMARY: The On-Call Biologist will perform biological surveys and monitoring in the field on an as-needed basis. Some desktop responsibilities may be incorporated into the position depending on needs, but the position is mostly field based.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in biology, ecology, natural resources, and/or a closely related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of California flora and fauna
  • Minimum of 3 months previous experience conducting nesting bird and/or special status wildlife surveys
  • Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently with short deadlines
  • Highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
  • Ability to interact and coordinate with state, federal, and tribal agencies
  • Proficiency with standard field equipment and technology
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to identify California bird species by sight and sound
  • Ability to identify California reptile and amphibian species
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to perform field and desktop work independently
  • Good communication skills, strong writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with typical utility operations and maintenance activities
  • Familiarity with basic use of ESRI GIS applications (including desktop, ArcGIS, Collector, Survey123, etc.)
  • Excellent navigation skills and good driving record
  • Experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle off-road or in rough terrain
  • Experience in construction monitoring and surveying for nesting birds is a plus
  • Botanical survey experience and familiarity using a dichotomous key to identify plant species is a plus
  • Possession of a Scientific Collecting or Federal 10a1a permit is a plus
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and communicating with construction crews a plus

Responsibilities

  • Perform special status plant and wildlife surveys, nesting bird surveys, vernal pool surveys, and habitat assessments
  • Biological monitoring during construction activities to ensure resource protection measures are being implemented
  • Work will primarily be field based; successful applicants should be capable of working long days in the field throughout the year, including single- and multi-day assignments
  • Botanical surveys for qualified applicants (botanical experience not required, but is a plus)
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings
  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright’s and Eocene Environmental’ s culture of safety and employee ownership
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures
