About The Position

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) at Yale University is dedicated to providing comprehensive services and support for over 6,000 international students, faculty, staff, and their dependents. The OISS Advisor plays a crucial role in assisting these individuals with various issues related to employment, immigration, and personal and cultural adjustment. This position serves as a vital resource for international students and scholars, ensuring they receive the necessary guidance to maintain their legal nonimmigrant status in the United States. The advisor will work collaboratively within a team to deliver services in specific functional areas, including student and scholar immigration advising, compliance with institutional and federal regulations, and general support for the international community at Yale. As a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), the OISS Advisor is responsible for ensuring that all activities comply with federal regulations and university policies. The advisor will focus on providing compassionate and individualized advising to international students and scholars, while also ensuring that the needs of specific schools and departments are met. This role requires a deep understanding of U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations, which the advisor will use to make informed recommendations for policy updates. The OISS operates on a hybrid work model, allowing for both remote and on-campus work, and applicants must have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status to fulfill the DSO and ARO roles. The OISS Advisor will also be involved in developing and maintaining relationships with students and faculty, providing excellent customer service, and creating strategies for effective advising. This includes utilizing technology to enhance service delivery and participating in regional and national conferences to cultivate a professional presence in the field. The advisor will contribute to major projects and programs, taking primary responsibility for at least two significant initiatives each semester that enrich the community or improve OISS processes. Overall, this position is integral to fostering a supportive environment for Yale's international community, ensuring compliance with immigration regulations, and enhancing the overall experience of international students and scholars at the university.
