Job Description Summary: The Staff Chaplain provides pastoral counseling and spiritual support to patients, family members/significant others and staff throughout the assigned healthcare setting. The chaplain actively serves as a member of an interfaith pastoral care staff sharing in activities such as staff meetings, on-call responsibilities, and providing meaningful worship experiences.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree (Required)
  • ACPE - Association for Clinical Pastoral Education - Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
  • Undergraduate degree from a college, university, or theological school accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Accreditation (www. chea. org).
  • Graduate-level theological degree from a college, university or theological school accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Accreditation (www. chea. org; www. ats. edu).
  • Degree must include a minimum of 72 semester hours (108 quarter hours) of credit and qualify as a Master of Divinity equivalent.
  • Provide documentation of ordination, current endorsement or good standing in accordance with the requirements of his/her own faith tradition or endorsing agency.
  • Four units of Clinical Pastoral (ACPE, NACC, CASC).
  • Certification or Certification -eligible as recognized by the following Spiritual Care organizations Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Association of Professional Chaplains, Canadian Association for Spiritual Care, National Association of Catholic Chaplains and Neshama Associatione of Jewish Chaplains; or others as agreed upon by the Director of Pastoral Care and VP of Mission and Ministry that meet the Common Qualifications and Competencies for Professional Chaplains (www. professional chaplains. org/files/2017%20Common%20Qualifications%20and%20Competencies%20for%20Professional%20Chaplains. pdf).
  • Demonstrated skill set and professional ethics that meet both the Common Qualifications and Competencies for Professional Chaplains and the Common Code of Ethics for Chaplains, Pastoral Counselors, Pastoral Educators and Students (www. professional chaplains. org/files/professional standards/common standards/common_code_ethics. pdf).
  • Initial employment of an individual chaplain who has not yet completed requirements for Certification may be done with approval by the Director of Pastoral Care and only with an approved plan and timeline for compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care as requested for emergent and routine requests.
  • Assesses spiritual needs/concerns of patients and their families using clinical pastoral conversation.
  • Communicates and documents patient responses to determine the effectiveness and congruence with plan of care.
  • Provides support and care to healthcare staff.
  • Participates in on-call rotation which may include overnight or weekend shifts.
  • Participates in patient care conferences, interprofessional team meetings, department quality improvement initiatives, policy review, and research projects.
  • Provides appropriate religious/spiritual rituals, non-pharmacological interventions to patients, families, and interprofessional team.
  • Acts as a liaison with the patients faith group/leaders including other community or cultural resources.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medical ethics and legal issues including advance care planning, organ donation, futility of care, and patient rights.
  • Acts as a primary contact for ethics concerns and formal consultations.
  • Provides care in diverse acute/non-acute settings including but not limited t o hospital, outpatient areas, extended care facilities, and homes.
  • Participates in system clinical pastoral education program as a mentor, preceptor, and didactic instructor.
  • Offers in-service education to the interprofessional team.
