About The Position

SUMMARY OF ROLE Job Title Here This position coordinates adoptions of sheltered animals through various off-campus locations and accounts for a significant percentage of our weekly adoptions. Recruiting, training, and retaining a volunteer labor force from our pool of shelter volunteers is the key to success of this program. This position also serves as one of the primary contact points for many community stakeholders. Potential adopters, community supporters, donors, partner shelters all interact with the shelter through this position, effective internal external communication and ability to keep organized are essential. PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Oversees both fixed off campus adoptions (Petsmart kennels for example) and mobile adoptions through one of our fleet vehicles. Develop volunteer shift schedules for all off-site functions, working closely with Volunteer Coordinator ensuring adequate coverage on a daily basis. Train new volunteers on off-site policies, procedures and provide supervision direction and resources as required. Develop positive working relationships with volunteers and community partners. Interact on a daily basis with volunteers, overseeing their work at off-site locations. Act as an intermediary in the instance of volunteer and customer complaints/issues, resolve matters in a diplomatic and professional manner. Initiate and network with various community and animal organizations to develop new offsite even locations to promote and enhance relationships within the community. Plan and execute all offsite adoption events including but not limited to, securing location, coordination of volunteers, advertising events, selecting and transporting animals to and from events, and processing animal adoptions. Collaborate effectively and efficiently with internal stakeholders to ensure offsite program needs are met, including but not limited to. Community Engagement for volunteer needs, Development for marketing and advertising. Adoptions and Behavior for animal selection, Animal Care for vehicle and equipment sanitation. Ensure a safe and sanitary environment for animals/customers/volunteers. Handle animals in a safe and humane manner according to the current shelter handling guidelines. Assist potential adopters in the selection of appropriate animals, conduct “Meet n Greets” as needed. Counsel potential adopters on responsible pet ownership, explain adoption procedures and guidelines, objectively interview all potential adopters. Process adoption paperwork and enter into the database following the offsite adoption event in an accurate and efficient manner. Maintain an accurate and organized filing system, receive adoption fees, record transactions and reconcile monies daily. Provide excellent customer service to the public at all times, including but not limited to, greeting customers, counseling about known animal behaviors, and providing adopters with basic information regarding training and medical needs. On a regular basis promote the Shelter and programs, solicit donations and sell pet supplies whenever possible. Maintain adequate inventory of supplies for adoption activities at off campus locations, submitting requests as needed. As needed assist adoption and animal care staff at the Shelter. Report and track animal health and behavior issues immediately reporting any concerns to clinic or behavior staff as appropriate. Participate in on-going education/training when required. Promote at all times, both internally & externally a positive attitude and image regarding the Shelter and its practices. And other duties assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, handling and animal welfare issues required, training is provided
  • Excellent organizational skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to deal with unexpected situations with poise and grace while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary communication.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers, staff and clients.
  • Computer proficiency, including Google suite, Microsoft.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and respectfully with staff members and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
  • Availability to work regular weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to speak, read and write English.
  • Spanish is highly preferred.
  • A valid New Mexico Drivers License is required.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Good physical health with the ability to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to follow instructions and delegate as appropriate.
  • Ability and willingness to work with, and around, cats, dogs, rabbits, and other species.

  • Ability to be on fee for long periods of time throughout the day.
  • This position relies on teamwork and effective communication between team members and volunteers.
  • Ability to handle less than ideal working conditions such as poor ventilation, heat, cold, sudden temperature changes sometimes we quarters, noise, as well as animal odors and dander
  • Ability to handle weather and outdoor elements
  • An understanding that SFAS is a managed admissions facility and the euthanasia and cremation of animals are regular functions of the shelter.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one before starting, clean driving record, and ability to be insured by SFAS carrier.
