About The Position

Performs individual and assisted recovery/removal and transfer of decedent remains from death locations following established protocols. Ensures proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of decedent remains during recovery and transport along with other evidence and personal items collected or received. Assists with receipt and release of decedents remains and may provide other administrative or technical support for the Office of the Medical Examiner.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school/GED Program.
  • Two (2) years of work-related experience or 30 hours of college or combination of the two.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain professional relationships with others.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to navigate locations such as secluded wooded areas, river bottoms or industrial sites in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must demonstrate understanding of chemical and biological safe handling procedures.
  • Work hours vary based on the needs of the 24/7 operation.
  • Position is deemed “Essential” for inclement weather and emergency management purposes.
  • Must pass criminal background check and mandatory drug test prior to and during employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License, with a good driving record and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Drives a County vehicle independently or with staff to locations throughout the County to recover decedent remains, evidence, and personal items and transports to Office of the Medical Examiner building or other designated facility following established protocols. Ensures the proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of decedent remains and other items collected or received.
  • Performs decedent remains acceptance and release activities following established protocols, including thorough review of related paperwork to ensure accuracy and completeness; performs data entry using specialized software. May inventory and securely store evidence/personal effects.
  • Performs administrative and technical support duties: maintaining records, receiving vendors at dock area, maintaining morgue case inventory, retrieving specimens, transporting specimens to laboratory, and assisting with supply inventory.
  • Cleans, organizes, and stocks County vehicle with necessary supplies. Monitors vehicle operational and mileage status; fuels vehicle and obtains needed services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
