About The Position

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS), is accepting applications for a seasonal Office Assistant to support wildlife management operations. This position provides administrative support at the headquarters of the Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS). The primary responsibility of this role is to provide customer service by phone and email to members of the public contacting the WHS office with wildlife-related inquiries. The incumbent will provide general information, technical assistance when appropriate, and route inquiries to the appropriate WHS staff. Additional responsibilities include processing incoming and outgoing mail, maintaining records, and supporting staff with administrative tasks as needed. Occasional fieldwork may be required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • One year of customer service experience interacting with the public, preferably involving wildlife-related issues.
  • Additional customer service experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  • Persons in this position may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of customer service experience assisting individuals with wildlife-related questions or concerns.
  • At least one year of experience using Adobe, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
  • At least one year of experience receiving payments and reconciling daily receivables.
  • At least one year of experience scheduling appointments, managing calendars, and coordinating meetings or logistics.

Responsibilities

Benefits

  • Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.
  • As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits.
  • You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
  • Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
  • Should benefits be available, this information will be discussed at the time of hire
