This is a limited-term position, working 30-40 hours per week for 4 - 6 months. Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director County Veterans Service Officer, performs complex administrative duties requiring knowledge of functions and procedures relating to the Veterans Department while assisting Veterans, their families, and others associated. They will be called upon to handle correspondence, prepare records, perform reception duties, file, and operate a variety of office equipment; the work requires the exercise of independent judgment in the application of office procedures and regulations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of college with Administrative, Business, Accounting or related field.
  • Two to three years office work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Composes correspondence, reports, legal documents and related material from clear copy or rough draft.
  • Prepares invoices and purchase orders in financial software system for Director approval.
  • Answers and screens incoming calls. Provides basic information in preparation for initial appointment using VA program checklists.
  • Logs all customer contact on daily data sheet for monthly statistical report.
  • Updates voice mail to reflect changes in business hours or staff updates.
  • Compiles data and information to assist in the completion of annual reports, special studies and various projects.
  • Obtains Birth, Death, and Marriage certificates with Register of Deeds in order to assist counselors with VA claim development.
  • Maintains marketing information including social media management.
  • Organizes all County service organization officer contact information.
  • Responsible for writing articles and dispersing monthly newsletter and department report for Health Services and Veterans Board. Presents to supervisor for review.
  • Organizes and coordinates annual Youth Government Day with area high schools and various County departments.
  • Assists in organization of Shawano County Fair booth including reservations, marketing material, and attendance.
  • Maintains monthly department expenses for CVSO budget review.
  • Ability to work with other agencies in conjunction with Veteran’s benefits.
  • Responsible for maintaining working inventory of office materials and marketing supplies.
  • Assists local funeral directors with burial of veterans.
  • Responsible for maintaining cemetery records for deceased veterans.
  • Assists Veterans with applications for enrollment in the VA Healthcare System.
  • As requested, participates in training sessions for benefits.
  • Maintains local, state, and federal databases regarding veterans’ death.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
