About The Position

Broughton Hospital, a state psychiatric hospital serving the Western Region of NC, is recruiting for a permanent full-time Occupational Therapy Assistant. Our 24-hour in-patient psychiatric facility serves adolescent, adult, deaf and geriatric patients. The incumbent in this position performs skilled work in assisting Occupational Therapists in the evaluation of patients and the implementation of a broad variety of occupational therapy services and interventions. Employees contribute to assessment, planning and conducting of treatment programs and activities for patients in the hospital. Occupational Therapy in this setting provides both physical and psychiatric rehabilitation services. The purpose of these programs is to develop and/or improve the client’s mental health recovery, coping skill development, sensory modulation, adaptive living, physical health/wellness, and occupational skills including activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), education, work, play, leisure and social participation. Work includes assisting in group and individual activity. In addition to services provided in the rehabilitation gym area, the Occupational Therapy Assistant will have a consistent presence on patient care units providing services and facilitating alternative treatment groups and/or Treatment Mall groups. Employees work under direct supervision of an Occupational Therapist but carry out some routine treatment activities independently as competence is demonstrated and as assigned by the Occupational Therapist. On the job training will be provided for site specific services.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in the State of North Carolina and two years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy principles, techniques, methods, modalities and their proper application.
  • Knowledge in Psychiatric diagnosis.
  • Ability to instruct unit personnel and lower level technicians in occupational therapist treatments.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients of various ages, developmental and functional abilities, medical conditions, psychiatric conditions, mental competence and physical disabilities utilizing the cognitive behavioral model and principles as well as sensory modulation/integration models.
  • Ability to effectively communicate patient progress to supervising occupational therapists and other interdisciplinary team members, including physical therapists, physicians, nursing staff, social worker, etc.
  • Selected applicants must be able to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check, and complete and pass BLS/CPR training and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.
