The Occupational Therapist provides specialized services according to the individual's training, experience, and expertise in the area of Occupational Therapy to patients in the acute psychiatric inpatient hospital. Evaluates and assesses patients for functional ability, strengths and areas for improvement. Formulates treatment objectives for assigned patients and implements individualized treatment services. Serves as a consultant to Clinical Social Services staff and other Carrier treatment team members desiring Occupational Therapy input. 3 days/week; experience with latency age 7-10 preferred, experience with adolescent assessments preferred

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy or other relevant area of study.
  • Master's degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • Minimum of one year supervised clinical work in a psychiatric setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
  • Occupational Therapist License.
  • Occupational Therapist Registered.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized occupational therapy treatment services to assigned patients/groups within the standards of department policies (i.e. MSR, life skill training, community re-entry).
  • Provides OT assessment and services to assigned patients/groups within the standards of the department's policies. Groups topics can include psycho education, sensory, social and recreational skills, creative expressions, stress management, physical activities, life skills, community re-entry, and coping skills.
  • Performs OT evaluations and assessments for referred patients within 72 hours of treatment team request or LIP order. Communicates information in a well-organized and professional manner to the treatment team. Identifies the patient's functional abilities and needs.
  • Formulates treatment objectives for individual occupational therapy referrals and implements treatment services within the standards of the department's policies.
  • Understands and implements hospital wide, regulatory agencies' procedures, regulations and standards.
  • Assesses learning needs, readiness and barriers to learning of patients, and documents appropriately. Provides age appropriate learning opportunities (individual and group) and documents teaching and outcomes appropriately. Provides educational materials that are specifically appropriate for the patient/family, considering age, educational level, culture and disability.
  • Communicates patient participation/progress in conducted groups to the treatment team.
  • Completes the following documentation in the electronic medical record: OT assessments/evaluation; OT consults/notes; master treatment plan (as indicated); group notes, and CDP expectations (as outlined in contract).
  • Supervises OTA students according to HMH standards and regulations and affiliate agreements.
  • Participates in CSS departmental meetings, unit meetings, problem solving teams, in-services and other meetings as called by CSS supervisory staff or treatment team.
  • Maintains current knowledge of developments within the field of one's specialization by attending in-service programs, conferences or continuing education as stated in the department's policy on professional development and New Jersey Licensing requirements.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
